Drax ditches Russian biomass.....2 Mar 2022 15:39
From Todays Telegraph..
Drax, the company behind the UK's largest power stations, has said it will no longer source biomass from Russia in response to the country's invasion of Ukraine.
The London-listed firm said less than 0.5pc of the biomass used last year at its plant in Selby, North Yorkshire came from Russia, but that it was working to eliminate this completely. Most of its coal comes from the US.
A spokesman said:
The current situation in Ukraine is very worrying and we recognise that these are very difficult times for everyone. In light of this we are working hard to completely eliminate from future deliveries the very small amount of Russian biomass we indirectly source.
This past year and the events in Ukraine have underscored the importance of reducing the UK’s dependence on imported gas.
Drax is the UK’s largest producer of reliable and dispatchable renewable electricity – playing a critical role keeping the lights on for millions of UK homes and businesses. Our biomass supply chain is large and diversified and the majority of our supply comes from long-standing allies and partners – the US and Canada.
If only we had some to sell.
