More recently, he netted a £30 million profit from selling the majority of his 26 per cent stake in Condor Gold, a London-listed gold miner that agreed to a takeover from Metals Exploration, a rival backed by Nick Candy, the financier.
What does he think of the health of the junior Aim market? It saw 61 companies depart last year, leaving just 679 left, the lowest since 2001.
“I think it’s cyclical,” he says, pointing towards his ability to sell down most of his stake in Condor Gold, despite the “so-called illiquidity on Aim”. He retains numerous interests on the smaller market, which include Manx Financial Group, one of the island’s lenders.
Mellon splits his time between the island in the Irish Sea and a second home in Ibiza. “I love the Isle of Man. I much prefer it to anywhere else on the planet,” he says. He has a fondness for the island’s less forgiving climate, which he attributes to his Scottish roots.
