Mexico says Bcn is the biggest concession but still looking24 Oct 2021 09:08
Mexico will invest 55.2 million pesos for lithium exploration; seeks to know how much there is
With exploration in 82 locations, the Mexican Geological Service will determine how much lithium is in the country for its exploitation. The SGM director, Flor de María Harp, explained that although a year and a half is a very short time, they will accelerate the objectives, since Mexico needs accurate information and “not be talking about what we believe and what we imagine ”, But rather have data with technical foundations.
During his presentation at the 34th International Mining Convention, he said that they have been working on lithium exploration for two months with a project that has 17 brigades, 26 geologists and 3 supervisors; however, the number of brigades is expected to grow to 22 by October this year.
The program for this 2021 includes exploration in 52 locations in the country and by 2021 there will be another 30, for a total of 82 locations.
"The only thing that is going to tell us if there is or not, how much there is and if it is economically viable is scientific data, that is why we are accelerating this program."
So far, the Mexican state has already reserved four areas with lithium resources, but the amount is very low compared to the concession that Bacanora Lithium has in Bacadéhuachi.
The four areas that the country already has reserved are two in Sonora, one in Puebla and one in Jalisco; However, by the end of 2022 it is estimated that another eight areas with greater potential will be added for study, which will also be protected through Mining Allocation.
Flor de María Harp foresees that in a year the SGM will already have more information and have good news: "we are at the beginning of a stage that is difficult, but it is not impossible either."
He also commented that several foreign companies have approached SGM with the interest of developing a lithium battery production chain in the Bajío.
"It is indisputable that lithium is of great importance and that it could make Mexico have a development if a plant with the complete value chain comes along," he said.
