As I mentioned yesterday, this is complex (!), and probably solved by trial and error lab work, not theoretically.

The baffling thing, is that one of the solutions, normally K+ ions is the culprit in this case. K in the mud often tames sticky clays but in this case K in the clay is reacting with the mud.

I had wondered if Na, or Ca could replace K in the mud lattice, but K has the most powerful effect.

I’m a bit baffled.

I found them also sheepy, but apart from fitting the bill location and services wise have nothing more specific.

Mud chemistry is very complex. I have worked with colloids and polymers, but nothing theoretical leaps out re the potassium rich mudstones - I suspect the answer will be formulated in the lab.

Potassium itself is used in muds to stabilise shaley wells.

Over to the guys in white coats. Not the ones who are sent round to GRH if he publishes reserves estimates ! ;-)
