So. This just in : a 24 year old medical student was found dead on 18 march, after having received a dose of AZN on 8 march. Cause of the death : thrombosis. Who would've guessed ?

But you forgot one variable in your assessment : the vaccines.

Most European countries, as well as the UK, counted on massive deliveries from AZN.
These have turned into a sh*tshow, and just a few days ago the company announced further delays.

This means that the EU's goal of vaccinating 70% of its citizens by the end of the summer sounds unlikely. In turn, the European countries should be wary of reopening their borders.

Looking up the paper (https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/cea.13765), the authors stated :

- "Colds did not have the impact on asthma patients that was expected and, due to the low exacerbation rate, the trial was stopped early"

- "However, the reduction from the planned 220 to 121 randomized patients and the unexpectedly low exacerbation rate substantially reduced the power of the study to detect a significant benefit of AZD9412 during the 14 days of treatment compared with placebo. "

So if I understand correctly, the failure is rather attributable to the trial design (half the number of patients than expected) and to basically bad luck (not enough patient experienced an asthma crisis).

This question has probably been asked before but there's no search function that I know of.

The company's website states : "In June 2014 the inhaled IFN-ß programme was licensed to AstraZeneca, who commenced a Phase II trial in severe asthma in July 2015."

No news since then ? I assume the trial failed, in which case, I don't see the point in keeping this outdated information online.
