In the greater part of China there is no ethnic conflict, they are all Han. Fully agree with you that Govt are seeking all routes to keep control over a population who are becoming ever more middle class on the main areas. The demand for democracy continues to grow, but they still fear being too outspoken. As for human rights, in a country of 1.3 Billion, all things can happen, but in my travels from Hong Kong right up to the Great Wall I just saw so many people trying to make their lives better by hard work. They are a remarkable people, and, freed from the Maoist excesses, will return to their enterprising true natures.
