Yes it seemed equally implausible to me as well. I've concluded it is actually to help with cooling the Lithium-ion battery container.

ADES did not make the battery they only did the groundworks and installed a Lithium-ion battery from china's BYD at Eskom Rosherville.

not really, Vanadium has in the past often been derived from oil originated fly ash, or at least it used to be when significant Venezualan oil, the only sort that had significant Vanadium dissolved in it, was burnt in US power stations. That ceased a number of years ago and it was always ended up producing pretty expensive Vanadium at the end of the day anyway.

This story however refers to Vanadium recycling of spent catalysts not recovery of Vanadium from waste fly ash. Thus it doesn't really add any significant nett production to the global Vanadium supply.

Matthew Gordon clearly gets that we are a completely integrated mines-to-batteries company now and seems almost as frustrated as some of us are that the 'market is failing to get it' - no matter it is simply a question of time before the tide turns and the only question you need to ask yourself is are you going to own shares before this happens ?

The 2017 announcement only stated this:-

- so as far as I can see there is no clear statement along the lines of "Talaxis will be a 100% off-take partner for sales of Rare Earth concentrate" but happy to be corrected.

Drifter - just because water is significantly more dense than air it does not mean that you can automatically extract more energy from it. The fluid speed is one very very key component of the power equation - the power extracted varies as the 3rd power of the fluid flow speed - thus wind speeds of 5m/s (about 20km/hr) compare very favourable with tidal flow speeds which are perhaps 1m/s or less (https://www.research.ed.ac.uk/portal/files/26560357/Iyer_Renewable_Energy_Postprint.pdf)

The v cubed term therefore can favour the wind turbine by a factor of 125.

Furthermore it is now possible to make wind turbines with rotor diameters of 120m or so, which again enters into the power equation, this time squared. The largest tidal turbine that I know of is 30m in diameter - thus there is a factor of 16 favouring the larger wind turbines.

Taken together these factors favour the wind turbines by a factor of 2,400 which more than offsets the density advantage that water has. Furthermore the wind turbine does not have to deal with the possibility of stuff like seaweed and dolphins getting caught in it and can be easily maintained in-situ.

Thus reality does not actually defy logic in this situation.

Celery - other chemistries are nowhere near as advanced as the all Vanadium one which has been in continuous use for the last 30 years. The only argument against Vanadium has in the past been the high/strongly fluctuating cost of Vanadium - this issue has been resolved by the integration of Vanadium producers and Vanadium users (VRFB manufacturers) who now have aligned interests.

Furthermore the significant fraction of the overall battery Capex that the Vanadium constitutes (35%+) means that the electrolyte leasing model immediately cuts this cost out of the Capex and puts it onto Opex, which is a much more capital and tax-efficient way to operate.
