There are some short haul ferry trips where charge-discharge 2-10 times a day would be more than possible. In that situation the lack of cycling degradation of a VRFB as compared with a Lithium-ion system would make much more preferable. The fire safety performance and lack of thermal runaway of a VRFB is also far more important in a situation where people cannot simply run away from a burning or exploding battery.

For longer journeys the volumetric energy density (though not the specific energy density for shipping) is more important and I think ammonia or green methane is probably the way to go rather than compressed hydrogen.

1) last time I met Alok he and I were on a committee handing out innovation awards. On the occasions he did turn up for the meeting he did seem to have read the recommendations and had a few useful observations to make. He was always well dressed and often had an attractive female intern in tow.

2) last time I saw Kwasi he was striding across Great Court in Trinity College, Cambridge tying up a bow tie with a single hand. A skill one of the chemistry fellows suggested he had gained at Eton. I understand he has been quite busy since then sliding up the greasy political ladder.
