faramog - it is not so much of a game but more a question of educating the FeV customers.

Most chinese users of Vanadium already understand the benefit that V+N gives so from Terry Perles told me he reckons that already something over 70% of Chinese steel mills use Vanadium Nitride (i.e. V+N like Nitrovan) - they make this from V2O5, it is apparently not so difficult.

The rest of the world is progressively being educated by the Vanadium price.

Perhaps someone who still pays IC for the privilege may wish to post a comment that explains that they have not described the price of Vanadium correctly.

reteps - yep that will do it also - there will still be electron hole generation in the junction when a photon arrives but there will be just as much recombination as generation and this will generate thermal phonons which is essentially just heat in the junction - the same result, heat is generated instead of electricity and this is uniformly over the full surface of the PV farm.

reteps - in the case of wind I guess they simply put the brakes on the turbines and they never make the energy in the first place.

In the case of PV I guess a simple short across the terminals allows current to flow but with the energy being dissipated in the Photovoltaic junctions - so all over the PV panel so the thermal dissipation is not localised. The PV panel effectively becomes a dark coloured piece of glass that just heats up. I'm not saying this is precisely how they do it but in principle it is a way that it could be done but which doesn't make it blinding obvious that you are burning the dollars you could have made by selling the energy usefully.

The energy experts there were saying that we need to 'curtail curtailment' - hopefully that terminology will go the way of obscure obscurity and we can come up with something else that actually gets the message across.

The representative from VRB Energy (was Pu Neng - i..e Robert Friedland's partners) Mianyan Huang talk at the IFBF mentioned that in the North West of China, where Qinghai is, can suffer from up to 30% renewable energy curtailment.

What does this slightly obscure technical term mean, and is it good or bad ?

It means that 30% of the energy that you make from Renewable energy gets thrown away. It is not just bad it is a ******* outrage.

This is where batteries come in, because putting more solar panels up doesn't help if it is the middle of the night.

Neither does a 1 hour duration battery.

You need 4-6 hour duration batteries to store, and then deliver the energy harvested in the middle of the day back to you when you actually want to use it.

Here's a challenge for our group - come up with a better way or word to describe 'curtailment' so that people (politicians) understand that it is something to absolutely eliminate.

kevkan - pure coincidence but I was speaking to one mining industry insider yesterday and it was they that brought the topic of Prophecy up. They knew all about the grades there having been involved in the original Gibellini drilling program when it was originally undertaken by Union Carbide. There is no way to diplomatically repeat what was said so I will not do so - so despite Prophecy's obvious high profile promotion on behalf of Vanadium let's just not mention the subject again.

Yep that is significantly wrong - we have nothing to do with Glencore yet produce significant amounts (3750 tpa of contained V) when compared with both Largo (9600 tonnes V2O5 = 5376 tpa contained V) and Rhovan (9,545 tonnes V2O5 = 5,345 tpa of contained V).

Actually when you factor in the fact that our 3750 tonnes of contained Vanadium is supplied in the form of Nitrovan (V+N) that makes the Vanadium 30% more effective in steel strengthening process then our 3,750 actually can get the same steel strengthening effect as 4,875 tonnes of Vanadium when it is provided as V2O5 - so the comparison is even closer when you actually dig deep enough into the facts.

On the vanadium price - there are those here who think it will go much higher. Not I admit the battery manufacturers who would rather the opposite would happen but that's the nature of a critical traded commodity where supply is in the hands of just a few suppliers. Watch gilda
