as a condensed matter physicist my opinion is that the so called wonder material graphene is all hype and no trousers.
As a example - in theory graphene should be one of the strongest materials known to man, but then go and ask your pencil about that. The simple reason is that like in any metal the ultimate strength of a real world material is not determined by the intrinsic properties of the molecules or crystals that comprise it but is dominated by the effects of imperfections - eg grain boundaries/ slip planes etc. You can stand there as long as you like telling me that graphene is amazing etc etc and I will not believe it because the work has not yet been done to it's correct, and unhyped, conclusion yet.
Actually I know Andre Geim reasonably well - he used to come onto my stand at physics shows to ask a few questions with his thick russian accent before slouching off because he never had any money to buy equipment - that was back in 2005 before he hit the big time and he became Manchester's hottest property.
