Later in the IFBF meeting Sumitomo presented use case data for this machine which showed about half a dozen different uses that that battery has been put to - hopefully once the slides from the IFBF are available we can dig more into this.

Yep we noticed the drop around noon - slightly earlier than yesterday - seems quite an orderly disposal, though unlike the first couple of sells the more recent ones do appear to affect the SP - i.e. most of the MMs don't seem to know when it is coming. Can someone check my working - I make it that on each day since the 11th July there has been at least 1x 500K dropped - at minimum Wogen are 2.5M through their 4M warrant exercised on the 6th July.

Sharesahoy - I hope that you were not referring to the silicon thermal energy store guy - there is significant and unavoidable irreversibility in and heat-electrical conversation - it is called the carnot efficiency and is what limits thermal power station efficiency to no more that 40%. Unless you are using a heat pump to heat up the silicon in the first place, and I know of no heat pump that can work between the extreme temperature ranges that that bloke is talking about, then you have already thrown away 60% of your stored energy. When I asked the company that was pushing this idea about the efficiency I immediately got blocked on twitter so that tells you they have something to hide.

Plus the response time of a thermal system is measured in hours not milliseconds like a VRFB so there will be absolutely no value stacking for grid stabilisation services.

As someone who spent their years dealing with cryogenic systems I believe that the same issues plague so-called cryogenic energy storage systems, which are being pushed here in the UK. Sorry about that but that is why I am invested here.

Daisam and Sharesahoy - unless you are invested in RedT Energy or another VRFB manufacturer that does not yet appear to have any long term Vanadium supply agreement in place then I don't think you should be worrying.

Fortune and Mikhail are as on top of the situation as anyone can be and are fully aware that extremes of Vanadium pricing are not conducive to the long term VRFB market. This is why Mikhail is in the driving seat at Vanitec. Glencore do turn up but do not particularly seem bothered about contributing very much to the conversation - yet.

This is also why it is very good that BMN ramps up production to 10Ktpa as fast as possible - sure we will make a lot of more from the steel boys but this will be wisely reinvested to grow the VRFB market - I am sure that everyone will see before too long.

faramog - that was apparently what sumitomo had showed, according to Gary Yang of UET. Sumitomo have kept this information very close to their chests for a long time and only allowed it to be made public after strong encouragement from Vanitec I believe.

faramog - the enterprise value is the amount that a prospective buyer would have to stump up to buy the outfit - so this would be the current SP times the number of shares - that pays the shareholders off, then they need to find the cash to pay off the current creditors or debt-holders and so if you add liabilities to the enterprise value you need to knock of liquid assets, such as cash, as you could simply use the cash to pay off the creditors.

Daisan, my point was not about graphene per se but about hype in general.

The reason that the creek of technology disillusionment even exists is primarily because it gets bigged up so much right at the the start, then investors discover it was not such a simple story and they then run for the hills leaving the technology developer up the creek but sans propelling implement.

I am delighted that VRFB technology has been so much of a longer burn - they were invested by Maria Skyllas-Kazacos back in the 1980s and were taken forward by a number of companies under license from UNSW in the 20 years following that. They were too early as energy storage wasn't even a thing then.

With the advent of PV power at less than 2 cents per kWh in the last 18 months or so it now is most definitely a very important thing. VRFB's commercial moment is arriving now, but technically it has been ready for years.

as a condensed matter physicist my opinion is that the so called wonder material graphene is all hype and no trousers.

As a example - in theory graphene should be one of the strongest materials known to man, but then go and ask your pencil about that. The simple reason is that like in any metal the ultimate strength of a real world material is not determined by the intrinsic properties of the molecules or crystals that comprise it but is dominated by the effects of imperfections - eg grain boundaries/ slip planes etc. You can stand there as long as you like telling me that graphene is amazing etc etc and I will not believe it because the work has not yet been done to it's correct, and unhyped, conclusion yet.

Actually I know Andre Geim reasonably well - he used to come onto my stand at physics shows to ask a few questions with his thick russian accent before slouching off because he never had any money to buy equipment - that was back in 2005 before he hit the big time and he became Manchester's hottest property.
