Hamil - well yes, though Vanadium is not a rare earth, or even rare as there is more of it in the earth's crust than common metals such as Zinc, Nickel, Chromium or even Copper.

However as the Vameck REMX ETF illustrates it is being classed as a strategic metal alongside the rare earths in some funds and so fund buying for the rare earth component may also bring new stakebuilding in BMN.

page 14 shows Tantalium being listed as over 2000 tonnes. Given that the zones Ml 129 and ML 133 (the non Uis mine areas) are listed as having less than 200 tonnes of Tantalite, and tantalite only contains 82% Tantalum by mass this suggests that ML 134 ( the main Uis area) must by itself contain some 1700 tonnes of Tantalum, or 2100 Tonnes or Tantalite.

At 180,000 USD / Tonne Tantalite this would correspond to an overall tantalite value just at the Uis mine of c. 378 Million dollars.

not really I think it is exactly what is required in the Energy Storage market which up until now has been a piecemeal attempt done by a utility here or a utility there. In the US and UK the very first applications of large scale battery storage have been for primary and secondary frequency response and so short duration lithium ion batteries have been given a leg up.

Many utilities are discovering that this is not the only thing that batteries can be useful for - eg the California grid, unlike the earlier Maryland grid has legislation for markets in much longer duration energy storage and so the average battery duration there is 4 hours - really starting to hit the VRFB Energy storage sweet spot.

In the UK in 2018 we specifically had the battery derating proposals introduced which derated the short duration batteries as a way of trying to encourage longer duration batteries which can provide a much wider range of services (or will be able to once National grid works out a way to get paid for providing those services.)

In China they have already realised that batteries are not just for short duration frequency response, hence the 500MWh Hubei and 800MWh Dalian developments.

The SA Eskom BESS project will demonstrate in the most visible way possible just what battery storage can do for the very thin and relatively weak grids that characterise many developing countries. it is a remarkable laboratory to have potentially at our disposal.

the worldbank announcement scheduled for today here's a brief summary of the sort of things they are thinking of:-

By 2025, the World Bank expects to finance 17.5 GWh of battery storage – more than triple the 4-5 GWh currently installed in developing countries. With the right solutions, it can be possible to build large-scale renewable energy projects with significant energy storage components, deploy batteries to stabilize power grids in countries with weak infrastructure, and increase off-grid access to communities that are ready for clean energy with storage.

the balance of trades if you ignore the 200K trades is indeed balanced. When you put the 200K's back in on a naive inspection there would appear to be 800,000 more sells than buys. Which there ain't.
