Minnieggmuncher; bit of an academic argument. but for those that have a technical interest, the difference between these 2 bullet types is slender, and I would not want to be in the receiving end of either. The principle difference is that the 762 has a larger bullet but the recoil from the 556 is reduced. The 762 arguably is the better choice at short range (less than 300m) but the 556 at longer range (600m+). My days as a tyro competitor under the guidance of my late father (representative competitor) were at 900m and 1,000m range and 20 years ago. The standard in those days was 762.
My father, a coach for the England, Great Britain and Scotland Teams in many international competitions between 1980 and 2010 complained bitterly of the quality of ammunition. He maintained in his late 80's and 90's interest in Bisley. The main improvement, despite the cost at roughly £1 per bang was the consistency of ammunition.
I no longer participate in target rifle shooting, but I can confirm that the old Lee Enfield rifles were excellent base for the ordinary soldier. When converted with a Ferlach barrel, Mauser action, decent ammunition and a steady hand, a single and clean shot was accurate and was a very good choice for an identified target.
