RT, just to clarify, I don't doubt some prefer not to meet management, but many others insist on it. In this sector Rick Rule is a point in case, as is Irwin.

I guess some prefer your route while many others take an entirely different approach, although heaven knows how you can judge a team without seeing the whites of their eyes. Doing a Google search on their cv doesn't do the trick.

Presumably that's why private equity investors and virtually every fund manager I've ever met place so much emphasis on meeting management? Similarly, company ceos spend a considerable amount of time talking to them.

Management are key to everything and simply to dismiss the idea of talking to them strikes me as very naive.

There's nothing we can do about the management team and like it or not, we're stuck with them.

Would you say the merger of Glencore with Xstrata was a good deal? He was also head of strategy when numerous other transactions were completed.

The only thing I can say is that having spoken at length to the guy, I was very impressed and he was very clear about their ambitions, which don't include giving the company away for next to nothing. Compared to the previous incumbents, he's on a completely different level, but as you've said previously, time will tell.
