Eloro, I'd be surprised if anyone was completely oblivious to the country risk, but I think it's a question of perspective. As Eish points out, so much of the world's mineral wealth is situated in very dodgy jurisdictions and by comparison we appear to be in one which has become very supportive of mining, albeit provided it's in the right place, like Cascabel.

Nobby is very important for us and the good news is that he has good support for his crackdown on cartels. We need his re-election.

Jerry, far from it! My observation about gold is simply due to the fact I've never really paid much attention to it. I'm also aware you have a keen interest in what happens to the gold price and are therefore far better researched.

Jerry, absolutely, although from the way things are looking, copper will continue its appreciation, but I'm not sure about gold. Whoever ends up buying this will do so based upon the very long term view of the future for copper.

Eloro, yes, I shared a house with a Filipino at university and lived in Manila for a couple of years, albeit that was a long time ago. I still have a number of friends there and have maintained an interest in the country.

There's an interesting comparison between Ecuador and the Philippines under Duerte. He was wildly unpopular in the international community, but hugely popular at home. His measures against the drugs trade were brutal and pretty barbaric, but did he care about what the UN said? Nope. He delivered really significant growth to the extent the country is now the fastest growing economy in Asia. The key difference is Nobby is no Duerte. He's not an unsophisticated yob.

Duerte's biggest mistake was to align the country with China, something Marcos has reversed and growth has continued apace. The Philippines has had a civil war going on in the south for decades and Mindanao is not a place you'd want to visit as a westerner, but still the mining industry invests there.

Has any of this deterred inward investment? No, quite the opposite and the US, and every major European nation has done what every nation does when it deals with a regime that may be a bit suspect; it pinches its nose and carries on regardless. It's called Real Politique.

DBW, Ecuador is ranked 65th in the league table of global murder rates. If you look at the countries ranking above them you'll note that many are nations which have attracted significant investment for mining, especially from China.
