Rolls-Royce SMR sees “huge opportunity” in Central Europe2 Feb 2025 19:17
“Hungary is an experienced and credible nuclear nation and our work in Central Europe – including our strategic partnership with Czech utility, ČEZ – means there is a huge opportunity in the region,” said Rolls-Royce SMR’s Director of Strategy and Business Development, Alan Woods. “The announcement on cooperation between the UK and Hungary is exciting.”
The statement refers to the announcement by Hungarian Foreign Minister, Péter Szijjártó after a meeting in London with his British counterpart, Foreign Secretary, David Lammy. Hungarian minister highlighted UK-based Rolls-Royce as one of the world’s leading companies in research and development of small modular reactors (SMRs).
As Szijjártó expressed, if this technology makes its way, Hungary would clearly be interested in using it. His statement is in line with the National Energy and Climate Plan, which included a reference to the government’s intention to exploit the potential of SMR deployment, and the state-owned MVM Group’s strategy until 2035, which includes the deployment of one SMR by 2035.
The process, however, is more advanced in Czechia. Last October, Rolls-Royce SMR and the Czech energy company ČEZ Group entered into a strategic partnership aimed at deploying SMRs in both the United Kingdom and Czechia.
