Rolls-Royce SMR has welcomed the announcement by Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó of growing strategic cooperation with the UK on nuclear energy, including a specific focus on small modular reactors.

Rolls-Royce SMR’s Director of Strategy and Business Development, Alan Woods, said: “The announcement on cooperation between the UK and Hungary, which specifically mentioned SMRs and described Rolls-Royce SMR as a leader in the development and deployment of this technology, is exciting.

“Hungary is an experienced and credible nuclear nation and our work in Central Europe – including our strategic partnership with Czech utility, CEZ – means there is a huge opportunity in the region.”

Each ‘factory-built’ Rolls-Royce SMR nuclear power station will provide enough low-carbon electricity to power a million homes for more than 60 years, and will create thousands of long-term, high-skilled jobs.

The UK has nine nuclear reactors currently producing 13% of the country’s electricity. All but one of these reactors are scheduled to be shut down by the end of 2028.

Rolls Royce hopes, optimistically, to receive design approval by mid-2024 and then be able to produce power for the grid by 2029. The company plans to start building parts in anticipation by 2024.

Dutch nuclear energy development and consultancy company ULC-Energy BV has signed a Letter of Intent with UK-based zero emissions energy and technology developer Chiltern Vital Group to collaborate on delivering innovative clean energy solutions for CVG's business park properties.

This collaboration will initially focus on the Berkeley Science and Technology Park and the Yorkshire Energy Park, with plans to expand across other sites in the United Kingdom and the European Union.

In 2024, Chiltern Vital Group (CVG) acquired the Berkeley Science and Technology Park, located next to the former Berkeley Magnox nuclear power plant in in Gloucestershire, southwest England. Vital Energi is a major shareholder in CVG, Berkeley and the Yorkshire Energy Park and is CVG's energy infrastructure and decarbonised heat partner in the UK.

With its partners - including Western Gateway, SGSC, University of Bristol, Vital Energi and Rolls-Royce SMR - CVG intends to create a world-first net-zero and nuclear technologies campus at the Berkeley Science and Technology Park. This will be the first step towards a 'net-zero super cluster' investment zone, encouraging the roll out of Rolls-Royce small modular reactor (SMRs) alongside an array of net-zero technologies
