Defence Minister Richard Marles has doubled down on his Party’s position against nuclear production on Australian soil.

Mr Marles was questioned about a $5 billion cheque to the UK for Rolls Royce to produce the AUKUS submarines' nuclear reactors.

“We are not in a position to be able to build nuclear reactors here,” Mr Marles told Sky News Australia.

“If you went down that path, you certainly wouldn’t be getting our submarines in the timeframe that we need them.

“There is a facility in the UK right now which is building reactors for the British fleet – what we are doing is seeing an expansion of that.

Britain’s defence sector received a major boost after two industrial giants were chosen to build Australia’s next-generation nuclear powered submarines.

BAE Systems and Rolls-Royce have been picked by the Australian government alongside domestic defence company ASC Pty and will deliver the SSN-AUKUS submarines in the early 2040s.
