Yes, 731, but after they announced that they were calling off the RIO bid, BHP's shares jumped, and since then the lowest closing price was 975, which I reckon is a more realistic floor measure now. As regards the upside, they are very fully valued in P/E terms, relative to other miners. A safe share but perhaps great gains are not to be expected.

They've gone down due to market panic, as have all the miners. Have their revenue flows dried up - no. Is the world economy shrinking? No. So the price has gone down because the market is stupid.

LMI has underperformed - since last August, their shares have stood still. ENRC and FXPO doing very well, relatively recent listings and much to come in medium term. AAL held back by its Tarmac division but tipped by some brokers. Rio has some bid premium in the price, also to a lesser extent does KAZ. Anto seems to lag the sector, up 11% since August 07. VED is a good bet, gained 42% in the same period all by organic growth. Also look at IFL. And XTA altho again there is bid speculation which has inflated price. Overall I think this is a good place to be even if there is a US slowdonw as China and India are generating huge domestic demand. Bear in mind though that some of these cos are in very dodgy parts of the world, you don't want to put your pension in there...

If Vanco's in one of their funds along with 40 odd others, the losses won't be that visible especially in the current market. Possible there's a concert party going on, I'm sure it happens all the time.

This is a good conspiracy theory. If that happened, the company would make an offer to the shareholders and if it received the assent from the percentage required (in its articles of association?)then it would happen. Shareholders who did not sell would form a rump known as Dissenting Shareholders, but their legal status in terms of sharing in the future value of the company I don't know. I suppose it would be possible to prove insider trading/fraud but very difficult as it would involve airing a lot of dirty washing that stock markets prefer to keep out of sight.

In the digest of the weekend's papers, I see there were buying tips in the FT, including Wetherspoon which have just gone down 7%, after falling ?% yesterday. I topped up VPC last week after Buys from two major brokers, now they're down about 20%. I did wonder at the time if it was wise - well, can only blame myself. How can any broker really give buying tips in this market, they just devalue their own credibility. Seems to me the best thing to do with one's shares atm is sell the lot - even at a loss - and buy back in a week or so hence - a lot more shares for the same money. More difficult with VAN as they won't necessarily follow the market. Which is nice. So, how did you handle it during the 1929 crash?
