UK housebuilder Persimmon lifts home-build target in tough market7 Nov 2023 07:52
Nov 7 (Reuters) - British homebuilder Persimmon (PSN.L) said on Tuesday it would build more homes this year than its earlier expectation, while pointing to "highly uncertain" market conditions in 2024 as high mortgage costs and a cost-of-living squeeze keep buyers away.
The target hike comes after peers Barratt (BDEV.L) and Vistry (VTYV.L) last month flagged that challenges in the British housing market would continue over the coming months.
High mortgage rates have dented sales for much of this year, forcing builders to warn on profits and cut home-build targets at a time when the UK economy is battling marked challenges, including sticky inflation and slowdown.
Persimmon said overall pricing remained "broadly stable", but it had experienced a slight reduction in private average selling price in its order book and an increase in the use of incentives in certain regions.
The York-based company, which offers a range of homes from studio apartments to five-bedroom houses, said the private sales rate improved over the past five weeks to 0.59 units, compared with 0.45 homes in the corresponding period last year.
The FTSE 250 (.FTMC) firm now expects to build 9,500 homes in 2023, above its August forecast of 9,000 units, helped by improved sales since the start of October.
