Sector movers: Telecoms sector gets BT boost

Thu, 21st Oct 2010 15:28

BT is boosting the telecoms sector. The UK government has to guarantee all BT employees in the BT pension scheme not just the ones that joined prior to privatisation in 1984, according to a court ruling today. The government argued that the Crown Guarantee only covered members of the pension scheme before BT was privatised and not subsequent employees. The courts disagreed and said that it covers members that joined before and after privatisation. The guarantee only comes into play if BT becomes insolvent. The pharma sector is in the red, dragged lower by GlaxoSmithKline, which reported better than expected earnings per share before restructuring costs but says that the operating environment is challenging.Top performing sectors so far todayHousehold Goods & Home Construction 6,435.30 +3.11%Construction & Materials 3,640.21 +2.90%Fixed Line Telecommunications 2,087.52 +2.84%Automobiles & Parts 4,210.86 +2.50%Food Producers & Processors 4,907.32 +2.28%Bottom performing sectors so far todayAlternative Energy 2,752.89 -3.84%Pharmaceuticals & Biotechnology 9,355.99 -0.83%Mobile Telecommunications 3,826.22 -0.56%Technology Hardware & Equipment 583.32 -0.16%Food & Drug Retailers 5,001.28 -0.13%
