March 4 (Reuters) - March 4 (Reuters) - Danish provider of turnkey AC/DC cable solutions NKT has signed its biggest ever contract for a single cable project.
The contract is for NKT to deliver the high-voltage direct current (HVDC) power cable system for Eastern Green Link 3, a planned electricity transmission link designed to move large amounts of power between northeast Scotland and eastern England.
* The contract is with a joint venture between National Grid Electricity Transmission and SSEN Transmission
* Value of contract is "more than" EUR 2.2 billion ($2.55 billion)
* NKT will design, manufacture, and install a 525 kV HVDC cable system, including onshore and offshore sections.
* The route is about 680 km long
* EGL3 is described as the UK's largest investment of its kind in electricity transmission, aimed at boosting grid resilience and efficiency
* The 525 kV HVDC connection is intended to move renewable power efficiently from the North of Scotland to demand centres in the South
* The project is expected to help provide more affordable, reliable, low-carbon electricity for up to around 2 million UK homes and businesses ($1 = 0.8615 euros) (Reporting by Agnieszka Olenska; Editing by Matt Scuffham)
