FTSE 100 movers: Black Friday boosts retail, oil prices hit producers

Fri, 28th Nov 2014 15:23

Retailers including Kingfisher and Sports Direct were performing well on hopes that Black Friday sales will be strong. Investors were also expecting the drop in oil prices to give consumer spending a boost, as falling petrol prices freed up disposable income. Also higher were the share prices of companies in the travel sector, as a drop in crude oil raised hopes that lower fuel costs will feed into higher profits. As such, Easyjet, TUI Travel and Carnival were all on the rise.Meanwhile, oil producers were feeling the impact of the drop in prices with shares in BG Group, Tullow Oil, BP and BHP Billiton all falling sharply. This follows the Opec oil producers' cartel decision not to cut output in the wake of a sluggish global demand and rising US oil production.Weir Group's stocks were also under pressure on the back of fears that developers may scale back their spending budgets, a trend that hit a range of other energy companies elsewhere in the FTSE.Rolls Royce took a hit after Investec said that management should take decisive action to repair investor confidence, which had been "shattered" during 2014. The stock has fallen by around 34% since the start of the year on the back of weaker trading, poor communication and a realisation that the business is still "operationally immature", according to analyst Rami Myerson.FTSE 100 - RisersCarnival (CCL) 2,817.00p +4.45%Kingfisher (KGF) 312.40p +3.55%St James's Place (STJ) 793.00p +2.99%TUI Travel (TT.) 445.00p +2.70%Vodafone Group (VOD) 233.45p +2.68%Compass Group (CPG) 1,092.00p +2.63%Imperial Tobacco Group (IMT) 2,962.00p +2.53%Diageo (DGE) 1,982.50p +2.51%Sports Direct International (SPD) 660.00p +2.48%G4S (GFS) 277.00p +1.69%FTSE 100 - FallersBG Group (BG.) 900.00p -8.79%Tullow Oil (TLW) 426.60p -8.24%Weir Group (WEIR) 1,880.00p -4.08%BHP Billiton (BLT) 1,517.00p -3.19%Fresnillo (FRES) 709.00p -3.01%Intertek Group (ITRK) 2,336.00p -2.95%Ashtead Group (AHT) 1,052.00p -2.41%Royal Dutch Shell 'A' (RDSA) 2,126.50p -2.41%Anglo American (AAL) 1,319.50p -2.40%Royal Dutch Shell 'B' (RDSB) 2,213.00p -2.32%
