BoE's Bailey says AI productivity boost may take time to emerge

Thu, 21st May 2026 16:08

May 21 (Reuters) - Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey said on Thursday it ‌could take time for a productivity boost from artificial intelligence to arrive.

"Today, the life expectancy of a new model ‌release is around three to four months. But, even so, that does not tell ‌us how rapidly AI will shift the ‌productivity numbers," Bailey said in the text of a speech due to be delivered ‌in Sheffield later.

"AI may well ride to the rescue, but how ‌quickly it will arrive in the productivity numbers is ‌an open question," he added. (Reporting by Andy Bruce; editing by David Milliken)
