Worldpay Names Renowned Banker Deanna Oppenheimer To Board

Wed, 18th Nov 2015 12:21

LONDON (Alliance News) - Michael Rake isn't the only new appointment to the board of directors at Worldpay Group PLC to have a history with London-listed bank Barclays PLC.

The payments company on Wednesday named Deanna Oppenheimer, a former Barclays retail and business banker, as an independent non-executive director and the chair of its risk committee from January 1, 2016.

Oppenheimer joined Barclays as the chief executive of its UK retail banking operations, having spent her career to that point at largest savings and loan organisation Washington Mutual Inc for 20 years.

The new Worldpay director is credited with shaking up Barclays' retail and business banking divisions, and went on to serve as the bank's vice chair of global retail banking. In addition, Oppenheimer led Barclays' UK and Western Banking operations. She left Barclays in 2011 and has since founded CameoWorks LLC, a retail and financial services advisory firm.

Once voted among the most powerful women in banking, Oppenheimer joins Worldpay at a time when the board of the payments company consists solely of men, though its executive team does include Ruth Prior as deputy chief financial officer to Rick Medlock.

"Worldpay has an important role to play in the future of payments and in driving innovative practices across the industry," Oppenheimer said in a statement.

Oppenheimer holds a number of non-executive directorships, sitting on the boards of French insurer and asset manager AXA Group, ATM provider NCR Corp, UK supermarket Tesco PLC and its banking arm Tesco Bank.

As well as joining Rake, who became chairman of Worldpay in September and is stepping down as Barclays' deputy chairman at the end of the year, Oppenheimer will at Worldpay sit on a board that include also her Tesco PLC colleague John Allan, who is the supermarket's chairman.

Allan is a non-executive director at Worldpay, having previously served as chairman from 2011 until Rake's appointment.

Shares in Worldpay were up 1.1% at 284.51 pence on Wednesday.
