Technology Minerals firm to begin battery recycling plant operations

Thu, 19th Oct 2023 11:09

(Alliance News) - Technology Minerals PLC on Thursday said its 48% owned battery recycling business, Recyclus Group Ltd, has received final clearance from the UK Environment Agency for the variation licence to begin full automated operations at its lead acid battery recycling plant in Tipton, West Midlands.

The London-based battery metals mining and recycling firm said the EA permit allows Recyclus to enter the commissioning phase at the plant, gradually increasing the monthly volumes being processed over a period of around four months.

Technology Minerals said the EA licence was a "significant" milestone as it represents the last required licence for the company at both its Wolverhampton and Tipton plants, allowing full automated operations, and "paving the way for eight additional plants Recyclus plans to build in the coming years".

The Tipton plant is the first among Recyclus' planned five lead acid plants to be located in the UK, Technology Minerals said, with the facility having the capacity to recycle up to 15,000 tonnes of lead acid materials during the first full year of operations.

Technology Minerals said Recyclus is committed to scaling up its efforts over the coming years, with a target of processing a cumulative total of 80,000 tonnes across the subsequent four lead acid plants.

"We are delighted to announce that Recyclus has received final approval from the Environment Agency to initiate full automated operations at its lead acid recycling facility in Tipton. This is a significant milestone for Recyclus and represents the first of five lead acid battery recycling facilities the company aims to establish in the UK," said Technology Minerals Chair Robin Brundle.

Shares in Technology Minerals were up 7.9% to 1.54 pence each in London on Thursday morning.
