FTSE 100 movers: Tesco leads risers, but travel stocks slide on Ebola fears

Tue, 07th Oct 2014 15:40

Supermarkets were continuing to claw their way back after a string of profit warnings and an accounting scandal at Tesco hammered sentiment last month. Shares in the UK's largest retailer were trading nearly 5% higher after the news that the company has asked another senior manager to step down and reports of a rebuffed bid for its data analysis arm.Rivals J Sainsbury and Wm Morrison, which have also both fallen sharply recently, were both trading nearly 1% higher. The revelation that Glencore had approached Rio Tinto about a "possible combination" in the summer gave the mining sector a boost, even though proposal was turned down. The deal would have created the biggest mining company in the world with a market value estimated to be $160bn, surpassing that of BHP Billiton, which stands at $154bn.Anglo American and Randgold Resources were both also performing well.Airlines and other travel stocks were flying lower after it was confirmed that the Ebola virus has reached western Europe. A nurse has been diagnosed with the disease at a hospital in Madrid, where a reported 52 other patients are being monitored for signs of the illness. IAG, Carnival, Easyjet and TUI were all in the red.Pharmaceuticals were also under the weather after Morgan Stanley cut its rating on the European healthcare sector to 'underweight'.FTSE 100 - RisersTesco (TSCO) 184.50p +4.38%Rio Tinto (RIO) 3,121.00p +4.14%Anglo American (AAL) 1,377.50p +2.19%Randgold Resources Ltd.
