London close: Stocks rise on first day of Carney's mandate

Mon, 01st Jul 2013 17:24

Equities began the third quarter on a strong note, buoyed in part by a bullish note from strategists at JP Morgan on commodity prices. Alongside a slightly better than expected reading on US manufacturing that helped to compensate for a somewhat weak reading on Chinese manufacturing overnight. Coincidentally, on Monday morning Goldman Sachs cut its forecast for Asian economic growth this year. Back in the UK, market commentary focused on incoming bank of England Governor Mark Carney, who today took the reins at the central bank. Interestingly, one observer described Carney's new job as a 'poisoned chalice,' given that he will have to have balance the sometimes conflicting aims inherent to managing growth and financial stability. On a more positive note, data out on British manufacturing, house prices and mortgage approvals came in ahead of forecasts. Nevertheless, the Bank's latest data on lending revealed that the provision of credit to non-financial businesses dropped by £1.3bn with loans to small and medium enterprises (SMEs) falling £0.5bn.Acting as a backdrop, Brussels charged 13 top investment banks with blocking exchanges' access to the lucrative credit derivatives market. Amongst those implicated were Barclays, HSBC and RBS. FTSE 100: Travis Perkins finishes at the top Builders' merchant Travis Perkins Group rose to the top of the FTSE 100 as data revealed a jump in UK house prices and mortgage approvals, signalling an improvement in the housing sector. Tullow Oil gained ahead of a trading update on Wednesday as Nomura upgraded the company's stock from 'reduce' to 'neutral'. In contrast, education and publishing firm Pearson retreated despite the company announcing the completion of its joint venture with Bertelsmann to create Penguin Random House. On Friday the company was forced to deny reports Rupert Murdoch and Abu Dhabi's state media group were in talks to acquire the Financial Times Group for $1.2bn. Tate & Lyle retreated following reports a European trade deal could affect jobs at the supplier of ingredients to the food and beverage industry's Thames Refinery, the last working factory on the river. Morrison Supermarkets fell as half year results from its online partner Ocadoshowed £2.4m of losses after notching up £400,000 in underlying profits a year earlier. Ocado is helping Morrison launch its shopping website. Miners are also did well as commodity prices bounced back. Over the weekend strategists at JP Morgan made a bullish call on commodities, telling clients that "in a number of commodities, prices have fallen far enough for long enough to force involuntary cuts in production and to spur fresh demand." Even so, they also pointed out that "Downside returns risk remains high, especially in metals." FTSE 250: Bwin.party rises as insider buys inBwin.party Entertainment led risers on the FTSE 250 after non-Executive Director Geoff Baldwin acquired 300,000 shares in the company last week, evenly split between last Thursday and Friday.Hunting, the international energy services company, gained after announcing that the outlook for the rest of the year remains positive.Infrastructure group Balfour Beatty, which issued a profit warning in April, dipped after Liberum Capital reduced its rating on the stock from 'hold' to 'sell'. African Barrick Gold rose to lead gold miners higher, including Polymetal International, as the price of the yellow metal jumped by almost 3 per cent to 1,257.0 dollars per ounce. Kazakhmys nipped at its heels as the price of copper was up 3.03% to $315 per pound. On the downside, Moneysupermarket.com Group, a holding company engaged in business to financial, insurance, travel, home services and other product or service providers, slumped.
