Banks were putting in a solid performance on Monday after Goldman Sachs raised target prices across the sector, led by the likes of Aberdeen Asset Management and Barclays, and offsetting declines in the mining sector. BAE Systems was higher after Societe Generale moved target price from 310p to 350p and kept a hold rating. Meanwhile, outsourcing group Capita was a heavy faller this morning after Canaccord Genuity downgraded its rating for the stock from 'hold' to 'sell'. The broker said that the attractions of Capita's investment case have "diminished". Miners have been affected by disruption caused by rain and flooding in the wake of cyclone Oswald. Evraz, Fresnillo, and Kazakhmys were all lower by late afternoon. Low-cost airline Vueling, in which IAG has a 46% stake, suffered following reports which claimed the company is set to take over many of the European flights operated by British Airways and Iberia. IAG, which was formed through the merger of British Airways and Iberia in 2011, plans to cut costs by using Vueling for short-haul services in Europe, sources told the Financial Times. Sweeteners and food products firm Tate & Lyle was also down after Investec reduced its stance from 'buy' to 'hold' following a 29% share-price jump since mid-September. Tate's third-quarter results are due on February 1st.
