FTSE 100 movers: Airlines take off after flying low yesterday

Tue, 24th Jun 2014 15:20

IAG and easyJet were flying high as they rebounded from losses seen yesterday following a controllers' strike in France and threats of strikes over pay by IAG's UK carrier British Airways. Bid target Shire, which last week rejected a £27bn approach from US pharmaceutical outfit AbbVie was making gains today after yesterday setting out its defence to shareholders with its 10-year strategic plan. Credit Suisse was providing a lift this morning, saying: "We believe ABBV will need to step in at a higher price in order to get the deal done."Meanwhile, Sports Direct was in the red as the group continues to face the backlash from investors over its plans to award founder Mike Ashley under a new share-based bonus scheme. Fund managers are believed to be planning to vote against the scheme and, according to various reports, have called for a vote to take place early next month. Utilities providers United Utilities and Severn Trent were both hit by a Goldman Sachs ratings cut to 'neutral'.Shares in Carnival fell after the group gave a cautious outlook in its second quarter results, saying that since March, its fleetwide booking volumes for the next three quarters "are running slightly behind last year", albeit at higher prices. Supermarket Tesco was in the red after Exane BNP Paribas cut its rating from 'outperform' to 'neutral' and its target price from 355p to 305p. Sunday newspaper round-up: HSBC, Easyjet, Sky

(Sharecast News) - A group of investors in Hong Kong have jostled HSBC into a shareholder vote on its structure and strategy, including a possible spin-off of its Asian unit. The group was led by minority shareholder Ken Lui. Its argument was that the Asian unit was "effectively subsidising" the western business to the detriment of shareholders. It was not clear if Chinese insurer Ping An would back Lui's latest move. For its part, the board told shareholders in a notice sent ahead of its AGM on 5 May that such a spin-off would "significantly dilute" its strategy, result in a material loss of value and lead to lower dividends, The Sunday Times first reported. - Guardian
