(Alliance News) - Dixons Carphone PLC on Thursday said it has been fined GBP500,000 by the UK Information Commissioner's Office for an historical customer data breach.
The regulatory body imposed the penalty on retailer's unit DSG Retail Ltd.
The electronic products retailer said in June 2018 it had discovered that its systems and data had been breached, resulting in around 105,000 non-EU issued payment cards without chip and pin protection being compromised. The company also found a fraudulent attempt to compromise 5.9 million cards in one of the processing systems of Currys PC World and Dixons Travel stores.
In July 2018, it said around 10 million personal data records could have been accessed during a cyber attack in 2017.
"We are very sorry for any inconvenience this historic incident caused to our customers. When we found the unauthorised access to data, we launched an investigation, added extra security measures and contained the incident. We notified regulators and the police and communicated with all our customers," said Dixons Carphone Chief Executive Alex Baldock said on Thursday.
"We have no confirmed evidence of any customers suffering fraud or financial loss as a result," he added.
Dixons Carphone said it was "disappointed" with some of the ICO's findings and intends to appeal.
Dixons shares were closed 0.3% lower at 138.25 pence each on Thursday in London.
