FACTBOX-North America natural gas export plans

Wed, 07th Aug 2013 20:25

(Updates with DOE approval for Lake Charles LNG exports to non-FTA nations) Aug 7 (Reuters) - A third U.S. liquefied natural gas terminal, in Lake Charles, Louisiana, received approval onWednesday from the Department of Energy to export domestic natural gas to non-free trade agreement nations. The terminal, backed by BG Group Plc and Energy Transfer Partners LP's Southern Union Co., ispermitted to export up to 2 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day (bcf/d) for 20 years. In May, Freeport LNG became the second project to receive DOE approval to export to non-FTA nations, from its LNGterminal in Quintana Island, just south of Houston, Texas. Operations are planned from 2017. The projects require U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission approval to begin construction. Cheniere Energy is the first company to have received DOE and FERC approval to export gas to non-FTAcountries and construct an LNG export terminal in Louisiana. U.S. shale gas supplies have flattened U.S. gas prices in recent years, prompting producers and terminal owners toseek approval to export the abundant fuel to higher-priced European and Asian markets. There are 19 other projects under DOE review to receive non-FTA export approval. Carib Energy, a subsidiary ofprivately-held Crowley Maritime Corporation, is next on the list, followed by Dominion's Cove Point project and theJordan Cove Energy Project in Oregon.
