U.S. stocks opened lower on Monday as volume returned to marketsafter the New Year holiday, with energy shares sliding again ascrude prices fell to fresh 5-1/2 year lows. The Dow Jonesindustrial average was down 0.77 percent at 17,695.17,the S&P 500 was down 0.79 percent at 2,041.85 and theNasdaq Composite was down 26.28 points, or 0.56 percent,to 4,700.54
