Beowulf hires former Swedish government official to lead Kallak mine

Mon, 13th Jun 2022 11:29

(Alliance News) - Beowulf Mining PLC on Monday named Ulla Sandborgh as chief executive officer of subsidiary Jokkmokk Iron Mines AB, as political and legal tussles over the Kallak iron ore project continue.

Back in March, the 100% owned subsidiary was awarded an exploitation concession for the Kallak North iron ore project by the Swedish government. This gave the green light for Beowulf to proceed with plans for an iron ore mine in the county of Norrbotten, northern Sweden, after many years of lobbying the government for approval.

On Friday, Beowulf said that residents of an indigenous Swedish village near its Kallak project may take legal action against the Swedish government following its decision in March.

Meanwhile, Beowulf said Sandborgh's most recent role was director general for the Swedish government's Ministry of Enterprise.

"Sandborgh has extensive experience in managing permitting processes and, as part of this, engaging with stakeholders, ensuring interests are safeguarded and benefits shared", Beowulf said.

Sandborgh added: "I am focused on minimising Kallak's impacts on the environment and maximising the positive benefits that flow from the project to the community in Jokkmokk. We can do this by developing a net-zero CO2 emissions operation, creating employment for local people, and building meaningful partnerships in the community."

Beowulf shares were down 0.5% to 4.72 pence each in London on Monday morning.
