FTSE 100 extends gains as BoE hikes rate but outlook clouded

March 17 (Reuters) - UK's FTSE 100 extended gains on Thursday, as oil majors lifted the commodity-heavy index, while the Bank of England raised interest rates as expected and struck a less hawkish tone on further hikes.

IN BRIEF: British American Tobacco closes USD2.30 billion notes offer

British American Tobacco PLC - London-based maker of cigarettes, tobacco and nicotine products - Announces closing of its USD2.30 billion notes offering. BAT Capital Corp has closed an offering of USD1.30 billion aggregate principal amount of guaranteed debt securities consisting of: USD700.0 million 4.742% notes due 2032 and USD600.0 million 5.650% notes due 2052. In addition, BAT International Finance PLC has closed an offering of USD1.00 billion 4.448% notes due 2028. BAT intends to use the proceeds of the offering of the notes for general corporate purposes, including the potential repayment of upcoming maturities. Citigroup Global Markets Inc, Deutsche Bank Securities Inc, Mizuho Securities USA LLC and SMBC Nikko Securities America Inc have acted as joint book-running managers for the offering.

Cigarette maker Imperial Brands in talks to transfer Russian business

March 15 (Reuters) - Imperial Brands has started talks to transfer its Russian business to a local third party, the tobacco company said on Tuesday, joining British rival BAT in exiting the sanction-hit country following its invasion of Ukraine.

FTSE 100 rises on boost from financials, Russia-Ukraine peace talks

March 14 (Reuters) - UK shares rose on Monday as hopes for progress in Russia-Ukraine peace talks lifted sentiment globally, with financials leading the advance on FTSE 100, while Rio Tinto fell after proposing to buy the remaining of Canada's Turquoise Hill.

The blue-chip FTSE 100 index         climbed 0.5% in
volatile trade, with banks                and insurers 
leading the gains. 
"If there is a ceasefire, that takes some heat out of commodities and fears of inflation or stagflation, that would be 
seen as a positive for economy and banks will be seen as one way 
of playing that after a weak spell for their share prices which 
has left them trading at discounts to book value," said AJ Bell 
investment director Russ Mould. 
However, the advance was limited as energy 
and mining                shares fell 1.6% and 5.0%, 
respectively, tracking weaker commodity prices.
