The FTSE 100 has started the week on a dull note, trading with moderate losses on Monday morning as traders turned nervous a busy week for corporate earnings.Markets are in for a "bumpy ride" this week with nearly a third of S&P 500 companies set to report their quarterly earnings, according to Financial Sales Trader Lee Mumford from Spreadex. "The majority reporting are those companies in the industrial sector which could weigh down markets as many price in a slowing sector," he said.Traders are keeping their eyes peeled for earnings figures today from Halliburton, Texas Instruments and McDonald's, followed by bellwethers Apple and Ford later this week. US housing data is also due out later on in the session.Meanwhile, results and trading updates from a barrage of UK-listed heavyweights are on the calendar for the next few days, including: ARM Holdings, GlaxoSmithKline, easyJet, Tate & Lyle, Rolls-Royce, Unilever, Reed Elsevier, SSE, Anglo American, BG Group and United Utilities.In Europe investors were also focusing this morning on results from Swiss banking heavyweight UBS and Dutch electronics firm Philips with both stocks making gains after their results.Markets in Asia were trading broadly higher overnight after Abe's Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) won a majority in the general elections in Japan. This is the first time in six years that the ruling party has had control over both the upper and lower houses of parliament.FTSE 100: Precious metal miners gain; Glaxo fallsPrecious metals peers Fresnillo and Randgold were in positive territory, continuing to recover after recent weakness as gold and silver prices rose strongly. Speculators in gold increased their net-long position by 56% to 55,535 futures and options during the week ended on July 16th, the highest in over six weeks, according to the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission.Meanwhile, Randgold received an extra boost by Morgan Stanley which raised its target price for the stock from 4,600p to 4,900p and kept an 'overweight' position. The US bank said the company "looks well positioned to continue to outperform in the current environment".GlaxoSmithKline was out of favour as the pharmaceuticals giant continues to feel the pressure from bribery and corruption allegations in China. The company, which has not admitted any wrongdoing, is due to present its interim results on Wednesday.Financials were mixed this morning with Barclays and Schroders performing well and Standard Life and Resolution in the red.FTSE 250: SOCO and Essar provide a liftSOCO International's shares advanced after saying it encountered about 117 metres of net pay section in the H5 fault block of the Te Giac Trang oil field, offshore in the South China Sea.India-focused energy group Essar Energy was making gains after Citigroup upgraded the stock to 'buy', saying it was well placed to benefit from changes to the energy industry in India.Bumi plc fell sharply after returning to trading today, three months after the Indonesian coal producer requested it be suspended on the London Stock Exchange.FTSE 100 - RisersFresnillo (FRES) 1,063.00p +3.30%Randgold Resources Ltd.
