DEN ALLOTTTTT...TTTROLL.
Not going into any Wickes store or buying the share whilst this preaching CEO is there, treat people as you would wish to be treated but will not take lessons from him and incidentally have bought more than a few tins of paint but no more
CEO resign !
We need CEO's that are concerned more with the health of a company than ticking boxes aligned with a political narrative !
More weakness in the SP today. Not surprising given you know who said you know what. Can't help feeling the coming weeks will be one step forward then two step back as we drift lower ahead of the next results. I don't believe the divi will hold at this level as it goes lower. There's more and more backlash now against this woke stuff, the Rye College secret recording being the latest. I see there's another one out tonight of a Scottish school with the teacher castigating a pupil saying there are only 2 genders. This is why I don't think this will go away for Wickes. It has stupidly got itself caught up in a far larger backlash that takes in a great swathe of anger from American lager to the indoctrination of schoolchildren. The tactics of Wickes senior management to hide hoping it will blow over will soon look a very poor decision. Sub £1 and I will go back in as it will become a takeover target which I believe is the only way now that this self-inflicted mess will be resolved.
Icemax, I and I suspect most others, have no idea what the alphabet soup of jargon terms you use mean. It’s quite simple, in a free country, which we should be in theory, people can hold whatever beliefs they like and so long as those beliefs don’t hurt anybody else then all are free to live as they please. Equality law in the UK protects certain groups from discrimination from
most organisations and businesses based on certain characteristics. The ‘Forrester Case’ set case law that one of these groups is which is protected are people that do not believe that gender is a fluid concept. This makes sense really as there are huge already protected groups where such an opinion is contrary to their beliefs, I.e., Muslims, most Christian’s, Jews etc, not to mention groups where such a belief would be contrary to the norms of that community e.g., Irish travellers. There is also a hard to define, but probably large group, who just have a difference of opinion on the matter with some probably holding this opinion strongly and others not so much. Therefore for somebody acting in the capacity of representing Wickes to say that customers who hold certain beliefs or opinions are not welcome in their store, not only may this dramatically reduce Wickes’ customer base but could also bring a large swathe of discrimination cases. Personally I would prefer that all companies stop telling their customers what they should believe and focus on running their business. However, I do believe that a company should be free to do so if they wish (so long as they are within discrimination law) but they should be careful to really understand public opinion on these matters rather than just listen to a noisy lobby group.
With some careful media management Wickes may just be able to make this story fade into history pretty quickly, however badly managed and Wickes could become the embodiment of corporate wokeness. I really feel many people have had enough of this and suspect we are at the top of this and it is fast descending.
Xenor, now that you mention black people, there is a difference between supporting black pride, and black supremacy. I understand & support black pride, and have supported LGB (in the past when it was just 3 letters) but what seems to be happening with LGB now, seems akin to black supremacy taking over black pride
These incidents reported on BBC and websites such as Third Sector, not just the Daily Mail, are those extreme right organisations as well?. Seem obsessed with descibing JK Rowling a bigot and anyone else who dosn't agree with your own views, give one example of her comments for your beliefs she is one instead of villifying her, think waiting a long time.
We simply know none of the facts about what happened, bar a few chosen snippets and presentations, and we have in the past seen how these things are simply rubbish. I'm afraid if you take it at face value then indeed you do seem rather gullible. But all of this is really an aside. Wickes were defending their position in being a LBQT organisation, rather than siding with the LGBA. To my knowledge, in this they are no different to any other public or private sector organisation. Beyond any political rights and wrings, makes sense as the LBQT community far exceeds the LGBA and the likes of JKR and the rest of the anti-trans lobby. Good luck with your investments.
The thirteen child was told by a teacher at Rye College to go find another school for having the temerity to disagree with teacher, no need for personal abuse just because of differences of opinion but thank you for agreeing how shocking the Oxfam cartoon was.
Oh I agree about about the Oxfam cartoon (though if you think JKR isn't bigoted about trans then you are off the planet). But regards the school incidence, grow up mate, don't be gullible chap. It's a story about a kid who used a very boring, oft-repeated mode of jibe/attack against your Marxian social constructs, and which has been spun for your outrage and consumption. It's pathetic.
Rye college catphobia incident reported in the Independent, yeah that's a real hotbed of bigotry and intolerance if your Karl Marx.
Know it's not spin that JK Rowling , who has never made a transphobic comment in her life, for years had to put up with abuse of the worst sort, with even Oxfam joining in and depicting her as a red eyed hag, withdrawn now and the ceo resigning
atrm2 - you really believe the **** the mail and the torygraph spin you day tare day. i mean, do you really believe it? it's fine to enjoy the outage and bigotry, i get that, but if you actually believe the spin it then you have a very superficial reality.
Not just older demographic is it Xenor, which is mostly target market of Wickes anyway. Teacher at Rye College lauched into tirade of verbal abuse against a young child who said they didn't agree it's a human right to identify as whatever you like, in this case a cat, fortunately taped.
Why do people here think Wickes is making political statements? Would you be saying the same if the company was supporting black people? I suspect not... It's just the inherent h0mophobia and transphobia of several older people showing its ugly head! What Wickes need to remember is that these people aren't going to be their customers in 10-20 years time so why pander to them? Stay old fashioned, go broke...
This SP should be interesting to observe in the coming year. Are they out of pink paint yet?
“To stay invested here means believing it was all a storm in a teacup and will pass”
I am erring on that side as as an opinion. Twitterati, utubers, activists giving it big licks. Mainstream press disinterested, it appears.
I like getting my divi.
Done on this topic unless something new and of consequence is reported.
To stay invested here means believing it was all a storm in a teacup and will pass. I personally believe the anger was such that enough people will take action over the coming weeks/months and in turn that will affect profitability. I could be wrong but I do sense the public are starting to fight back on these woke companies. Wickes might have got away with this six months ago but this time it feels different. I'm not expecting huge daily drops but would like to see revenue for this period before jumping back in. Dividend yield at this price is about 9% and that high a divi is quite often a red flag rather than an opportunity.
It is whether the "bigots", i.e. customers, are OK with giving their money to a business that lectures them, insults them and then tells them they are not welcome in their shops that is the real story. Perhaps they should put up a sign à la Basil Fawlty - "No riff-raff".
I'm not sure a whole pile-on by the twitter bigots is a good gauge, though I appreciate it might be your reality.
An early snapshot following Friday’s read across from Travis Perkins. TP recovering, +0.45%, KGF -0.6%, Wickes neutral.
Ps I had a significant holding in Wickes (for me at least!) - this will defintely impact sales - you only need to read the Twitter posts to see that. How big is the question - I guess we will know come the next trading update.
I doubt you’re in the least ‘worried.’ More likely revelling in a bit of negative posting, on a share you don’t hold. Can’t be proven either way, of course.
My worry re div is if Wickes suffers the same way Anheuser Busch did over Bud Light. There was a small reaction in the share price when the whole Dylan Mulvaney thing came out but a month later when the sales figs came out the stock was dumped. Could easily happen here and if it does that divi will be the first thing to go or at least be reduced. Plenty of big hairy builders will come across this story this week as it broke late last week. Customers are clearly leaving Wickes but is it a trickle or a flood? That's the gamble now with this company. All will be revealed in the next set of results of course.
Staying it pays a good dividend
