This is what Trump was so angry about Heid. He could see that a major NATO country (Germany) would be completely reliant on Russia for it's energy supplies. What then happens if Russia invade the Baltic States (other NATO countries), as they seem keen on doing? The NATO policy is all for one and one for all. Except Germany and anyone else it can influence, it seems. Great politics by Putin. Stupidity by Merkel.
The crux of the matter is Gazprom is intent on keeping sole ownership of the gas pipeline, against the European monopoly rules, which states it must be co owned to stop the supplier, Gazprom ie Russia from weaponising the flow to restrict supply for economical or political ends. The ultimate aim is to choke flow through Ukraine and with it payments allowing Russia to creep into Europe through the East.

Sir Ian Wood says banning new UK oil projects would be ‘absolutely crazy’
Industry doyen Sir Ian Wood has warned that halting new oil and gas exploration and production projects in the UK would be "absolutely crazy". Sir Ian said such a move would be harmful to the environment if domestic demand for oil and gas isn’t addressed first.
Without doing this, imports from nations with less strict regulations and poorer track records on emissions would have to increase. Sir Ian said: “If we do that we will damage the environment.
“If we don’t have our own oil and gas we’ll have to import it because we just don’t have any other resources.
“And if we import it we’ll have more potent gas and we’ll do more damage to the environment – it would be, frankly, absolutely crazy. It would be detrimental, environmentally
Taverham and selfishmcnimby
nice to have some grown ups posting here .
Ireland are in a worse position than the UK, and they've got a Green in charge of their energy supply who's saying NO to everything sensible! Disastrous. Europa 100% own the best gas prospects offshore Ireland but until people start freezing to death during blackouts it's more important to shut down oil and gas supplies to fulfil the green agenda.
Worse than our dependence on Russia for gas is the policy errors, for example it was decided the U.K. consumers should not pay for storage in Morecambe bay but should pay for useless smart meters. Our energy security hangs by a thread imv and frankly we need a hard winter to wake our politicians up.
Thank you SelfishMcNimby
That was a 'Heid Xtra Special Range' post.
Good post Heid. Some people can't see the wood for the trees.
In one week we have seen four energy companies collapse in the UK . There will be ALOT more go bust. FACT. Today was Utility Point with 220,000?domestic customers and People’s Energy supplies gas and electricity to around 350,000 households and around 1,000 businesses.
Gas prices are soaring in Europe and the UK.
We will witness Putin and an energy blackmail war, the victims will be the poor and vulnerable. Russia is testing the West ..again ! Russian gas through the Ukraine is at record lows. Without the Russian fees of gas to Europe, Ukraine could go in to recession. Russia has a firm grip on Europe with Nord 2 Stream.
US LNG can not compete with Russian piped gas at double the price. UK shale gas could have been piped to Europe. Putin would have been removed. This would have solved environmental issues , financial and calmed energy supply and security for UK.
UK will be back of the queue for piped gas , paying high for LNG.
My prediction is blackout outages by the 22/2/22
UK Energy security should be THE most important.
West Newton will become of National Importance to the UK.
Which could become more of a problem by 22.2.22 ?
