Ah, some of this I wasn't aware of. I did think the collision was a sort of convenient excuse not to complete the LONO. Although it still seems a bit opaque to me. Never mind in any case.
After the incident, the SI was unloaded of all containers to presumably bring the damage above the waterline. She then sailed some 800 miles under her own power to the Betsiktas shipyard in Turkey for repair. At the same time, it was decided to carry out engine wear tests to issue part LONO on MSAR. Maersk in the interim decided they didn't want the "chemical plant of a Scrubber" onboard their ships at that moment in time. Following repair, the SI was put on a different route which couldn't take in San Roque for MSAR fuelling at CEPSA.
The MSAR trial, was ended prematurely. A part LONO was issued.
Do not forget, that Maersk wanted to bind on themself some patents and lost. At that time sulphur was the new legislation, from 2024 is CO2 emissions and Maersk had no possibility to evaluate options with BioMSAR.
So the options, legislations, partner and financial aspects were total different as with MSC now.
Would Maersk have completed the lono had the ship not struck the wreck? We will never know for sure but I suspect they probably would have just to sign off on the agreed programme.
The accident and subsequent decision to use low sulphur gas oil, provided them with an opportune moment to abandon msar and the lono.
Form our perspective it’s been a bit of a tragedy. Had they completed the LONO, MSC could be using msar on their fleet right now, as could Maersk themselves as they now use high sulphur fuel with scrubbers!

In short, no. Maersk chose to comply with the IMO 2020 sulphur limits that were to be introduced and as MSAR was higher than the 0.5% sulphur limit, decided against MSAR with the additional scrubbers I believe. The RNS back in May 2017 sums it up:
"Further to the Company's announcement of 7 April 2017, Maersk has now formally notified the Company of its intention, in achieving compliance with the International Maritime Organisation's ("IMO") 2020 sulphur limit environmental legislation, to use only compliant fuel (less than 0.5% sulphur) from 2020 and that the use of MSAR® alongside exhaust gas scrubbers ("Scrubbers") will not be considered as an option for Maersk going forward.
Marine MSAR® supplied to date has been higher than 0.5% sulphur and one option in the future is to use such fuel together with exhaust gas scrubbers ("Scrubbers") to achieve IMO 2020 sulphur limit compliance. For operators who choose to use a compliant fuel, a second option would be for QFI to work with refiners or suppliers to produce a compliant (less than 0.5% sulphur) Marine MSAR®, but this would be dependent on availability of low-sulphur residual streams and further work is being carried out to assess the viability of this solution.
As recently reaffirmed by Maersk, the MSAR® operational trial has been successful to date and this should be further confirmed by the interim inspection report and Interim LONO from Wärtsilä.

Wasn't it? It was true, obviously, but then wasn't it used as an excuse by Maersk to discontinue? At least the two things seemed to be contemporaneous.

Fair enough apologies. I have never heard that on here so thank you for the info. In that case it would be nice to have a bit of luck this time and not hit any wrecks.
Facts straight AKHM. This was NEVER an Excuse by QFI or Maersk, it came in a note to agents expecting their deliveries of containers, by a third party consigning agent. The ship actually hit a submerged wreck (which was unmarked by a buoy!!) ripping a large tear in the outer hull.
Hitting the buoy must still be the most ridiculous made up excuse in history. Let's hope they don't need to come up with anything this time around and MSC are serious about adopting the fuel.

MSC Leandra has now left Coega SA and on it's way to Port Louis arriving on Saturday. She then leaves on Monday to Singapore arriving 21st Marxh. These are all scheduled times so they could slightly change.Hopefully the dry docking is in Singapore.
