Anyone else inclined to sell if it hits £1? I am inclined to but have always been relatively risk adverse.......
Hi Davey2 - I certainly wouldn't impart advice and I'm sure some will say my 'logic' isn't rational but I've always thought it odd that you're either in or out. I often sell down 1/2 my shares if I want to lock some upside in / don't want to risk all on a falling market etc.
I bought in at about 30p for the eventual divi and I'm happy to hold the shares 'til there's either a sale (hopefully over 130p) or we get back to selling beer and the SP gets back to that level + we get divis again. I don't really see the need to sell at £1, as vaccines are happening, etc, etc but like Lync says, if you want to lock in value you have to sell a few off to do that. One thing I don't see, is that there's a future without beer in it.
Worth keeping for the prospect of the share price hitting £1-50. Plus when pubs open the shareholder benefit of a 20% discount on food and accommodation in Marston’s Inns & Taverns pubs.
My average is 69.164p, whilst I certainly never expected £1 so soon this is a long term holder for me, especially given dividends when they do eventually come back into play. Plus I personally feel this is an all round safe holding. I'm also in SGC and TUI and it's the same for those 2 as it is MARS, if the price drops significantly (sub 50p for MARS) then I'll happily buy more! However I honestly can't see it going below 80p unless something dramatic happens. The potential takeover offer has certainly peaked my interest, like a few others here I just don't want them to mess with the company should they takeover. I like MARS, I enjoy the pubs/food and have stayed in their accommodation a number of times. Here's to a long enjoyable holding and a safer, pubbier future!
After Tastees mentioned the 20% shareholder discount it's even more of an inclination to hold for longer! Especially as the discount is only for Privilege Card holders and they get sent out every 2 years. Looks like September 2022 is when I'll get mine! If you held at least 500 shares on or before 30th September 2020, you'll be entitled to a card this time around - https://privilegecard.marstons.co.uk
Stowthorns, You can apply for the privilege card at any time as long as you can prove you hold 500 or more shares.
Perhaps I misread, thanks for correcting me. Looks like I'm off to apply for it! Beers/largers/ciders on me haha
Stowthorns, looks like that's not the only thing you misread - the discount's on food & accommodation, not booze.
Marstons are discontinuing the privilege card. They will honour it for another year but will end in 2022. I'm gutted.
Ben
If that is the case, then the extra non discount spend that we make could go into our dividend pot.
I believe that it is being replaced with a more modern scheme, not discontinued per se. After all, it doubles up as the staff discount card too.
agurney - at no point did I say the discount included drinks? I said in the first paragaph that I enjoy their pubs and food as justifications to why I'm invested and want to hold long term, but I didn't say what the discounts included. I merely said the 20% was a great incentive. Unless you're referring to my remark about the drinks being on me, I can see how you'd get that impression.
Knowing it's being discontinued, I'll sit tight and see what they replace the scheme with if at all. I hope they do! Regardless, I'm holding long term!
Email I received from MARS re their Privilege Card:
''As a result of the impact of the pandemic, we will no longer be issuing Privilege cards to new shareholders from 01 October 2020. In the current challenging economic climate, the Company is reviewing all costs across the business, looking at how best to support our pubs and reward our loyal customers. We are working on a new wider reward system for all who use our pubs and lodges and hope to announce further details soon.
If however you purchased the shares before 01 October 2020, please provide evidence of your holding (copy of a contract note for example) and I can arrange for a card to be posted to you.''
@Lyncj01, thanks for the update regarding the privilege card. I guess we shareholders won't be quite so privileged after this October when the current card expires. I certainly intend to make fullest use of this excellent share perk before then though, lockdowns and mutant variants permitting that is
