Thank you Cowichan for keeping us updated with this interesting news!
Looks to have been quite a task!
What a pity that Centamin plc doesn't have a live feed to it's homepage to keep shareholders updated on events like this!
Tibbs, Yes a big job but Mantrac are well equipped to handle what would have been a planned change out.
OK my knowledge and contacts has been questioned by Cowichan but he isn't interested in knowing the actual turn of events but for those who are interested.
So both preventative maintenance and repairs were made to the 6040 including the slew ring bearing to prevent failure which could have caused major down time.
Thanks very much, the slewing bearing seizing ,not maintained would mean it could not rotate, rendering it ,next to useless, for others to be clear.
Your useful post is clear to myself, good night.
Thank you Dasut.
Credit to Mantrac and the team of committed engineers for carnying out such a very professional operation!
I should imagine that the workload and operational environment exert tremendous pressures on the bearings!
British Timken bearings were once renowned for longevity and durability under stress, but unfortunately the same brand bearings produced today don't seem to offer the same in terms of longevity or durability!

Mr Bond it wasn't a major failure it was a few broken retaining bolts and the slew ring itself wasn't damaged. Unfortunately like all things mechanical they can break and as you can imagine mechanical equipment of this size doing the job that it does is under extreme stresses.
Tibbs yes I am and always have had considerable respect for the guys on the ground working in difficult conditions as it is very hot heavy work especially out in the desert. Fortunately not a bearing failure and this is why preventative maintenance is so important and even more so in remote parts of the world.
This little bit of research and catch up with one of my younger colleagues also highlighted the additional issues relating to logistics and didn't appreciate how serious the Suez issue is, as has not only affected Egypt's revenues but the knock on effect of shipping schedules worldwide with vessels in the wrong parts of the world because of longer journeys.
Nice long natter and update on some of the younger engineers and their progress.
Tibbs a live feed on a mine this size wouldn't be practical. It is a dangerous environ particularly in the workshop so safety conscious operation and the last thing you want is people wandering around taking films.
Ships crossing through the waterway dropped by 66% in the first week of April, compared with the same period last year, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said.
The Suez Canal is an important and busy trade route for ships travelling between Asia and Europe, often carrying commodities like oil and natural gas.

The Suez Canal expects high revenues of $9 billion during the upcoming fiscal year 2024/25 despite the major blow dealt over the past months due to Houthi attacks in the Red Sea.

Thanks Dasut, thats good news.
So I would think, nothing more than replace the bolts and lock nuts, likely plastic topped to minimizise vibration.
Which saves the more considerable downtime of replacing the casting and bearings.
Mr Bond I didn't go into the detail of the repair but would normally replace all bolts if a few have broken. Plastic top is new one on me.
Certainly saved considerable down time and money.
The plastic or nylon ,grips the thread around the to odf the nut , nyloc.
Hi Dasut & Mr Bond, I should assume that in reputable company such as Mantrac it would be standard procedure on any job like this to replace all nuts and bolts that had been removed with new nylocks.
Once removed the integrity of any fixing may well be compromised .
