Indonesian President-elect Prabowo Subianto will visit China next week at the invitation of President Xi Jinping for what will be his first official overseas visit since his election last month, the Chinese foreign ministry said on Friday. Regional political observers see Prabowo’s upcoming visit to China mostly in the context of Sino-U.S. competition for influence in Southeast Asia, and Beijing’s investment of billions of dollars in Indonesia.

Visit Timor, I note the article was also emphasising the need to work on internally driven growth in the mean time, to my mind the farm up could be an example of that and in general working on its oil and gas assets which could be a combination of internally driven and externally partnered, would help with the country's income, which can then help with developing prudent diversification.

The complicated Roadmap also seems to contradict the spirit of the ASEAN Declaration, which states that the first aim and purpose of the organization is “to accelerate the economic growth, social progress, and cultural development in the region through joint endeavors in the spirit of equality and partnership in order to strengthen the foundation for a prosperous and peaceful community of Southeast Asian Nations.” By issuing the Roadmap, and continuing to delay the granting of membership to Timor-Leste, ASEAN is showing no such willingness for joint endeavors aimed at accelerating the nation’s development, even though Timor-Leste has already met the basic criteria for ASEAN membership and has shown unwavering commitment to becoming a member.
