Just my opinion but I think this is a very short sighted view. If they cancel this project it will put another nail in the coffin alongside Brexit of so called "Global Britain". You can't grow the economy without modern and effective communications. They have been putting off this project for decades. Sorry if I'm off topic.
The green brigade need to stop focussing on aviation which have some of the most advanced engine technology with little option to replace currently and focus on other areas that could make a much bigger impression of Co2 and climate change.
How many of us have solar pv and thermal? Has the government mandated all new homes to have solar. EV seems the only area the gov are looking except the misguided boiler regs for heat pumps. (Although borehole type may work).
And how many buy plastic crap from china we throw away or never use?
I'm fitting solar, looking at an EV and even take home the plastic hotel bottles of shampoo and shower gel if unfinished.
We all need to get with the program but aviation always seems to be the focus. Look at ships! Many options from above where AFC could play a part. Shipping EV and grid balancing. Alkamem could also be a key product.
If the go ahead had been granted for a third runway, by the time it was completed, aviation would be far cleaner due to newer fuels., hydrogen /fuel cell powered!!!!
Not sure a high pressure gas is suitable for aviation. Get a fuel leak in JetA1 aircraft it takes time to escape. Gas, It'll be gone in a flash.
Advanced technology! What nonsense. It's decades old. In the same way that gasoline and diesel cars (even those with coffee cup holders and bluetooth amazingly) are still 100 year old tech just dressed up. That's the whole problem.
Im guessing Chippyjo is actually Donald Trump. However, it is possible to run aircraft on fuel cells. Lawrence Livermore Labs did it about 30 years ago. BUT it must be a propellor not a jet engine of course.
not all the green brigade are law abiding. As for legislative green policy, im fine with that but aviation isn't the green co2 low hanging fruit.
People work hard for their family breaks and downtime. Aviation makes that possible in a way no other transport can.
And no im not Donald, I have marginally better haircut and an empty bank account.
We're more on the same page than not BB, problem is most people have zero idea the technology behind modern aircraft and the strive to drive down operating cost the largest of which is fuel.
Reduce the fuel burn and emissions are improved. A380 production stopping due to fuel burn but is one of the most comfortable aircraft to fly on. A350 is composite fuselage to save weight. Its already happening driven by airline economics.
Aircraft being speed controlled as much as 250 Nm away from heathrow or queuing to take off isn't green either.
1.4billion cars in the world 39000 commercial airliners. Airlines fly mostly 85-97% full and cars mainly 25%. As i said, low hanging fruit.
Hi Chippyjo
I’m sure the aviation industry are making very nice “typewriters” or “clean burning coal“ (Choose your metaphor) and therein lies the problem. They haven’t a hope of increasing traffic and expansion plans while meeting air quality standards. Mitigating this environmental disaster by cleaner ground fleet and tweeks is simply not enough. They need a new generation of technology. The other problem of course for this project is a. It adversely affects the most densely populated part of the UK and b. It further develops the south.
It deserves to be canned. Arrogant remarks such as “this is a minor bump in the road and we will appeal to the Supreme Court” betrays the ethos behind these people.
Notes, that has already been the subject of discussion. Not viable and too short. That airport has non standard safety distances from the motorway already as its military. I know as I've flown in and out of there.
ReoninV, if you think a new tech can just be plucked out of thin air, you must be simple. The engineering involved in making a lightweight aluminium or composite tube do 800Km/h and 45000 feet in up to minus -75 degrees celsius and get a full load of pax at off the runway in Dubai at 570 tonnes is staggering. Everyday the engineers at Boeing, Airbus and smaller companies are working the engineering and economics to improve on the competition. Makes making a fuel cell first developed in 1883 seem simple and they aren't even commercial yet...
No more from me as off topic.
