“I restored a Skoda 100l.............”
I must tell you friendly in your ear, sell when you can, you are not for all markets.
Thanks for the video site, Paul1D...I enjoyed that. Brave lads to take a £40 Favorit to Madrid!
I restored a Skoda 100L about 20 years ago (in UK ...rhd). Been trying to get one (or maybe an Estelle type or Rapid ) over my side of the pond for several years but no joy so far. A very few got into into Canada but the climate probably finished them off.. An import from eastern Europe would cost around $5k to ship.
(yawns)
Well yes you mention your pedigree,
Panem et circenses!
And since you are into road trips in ‘pedigree’ cars
Yeehaw

" Rotherham, Oxford, Rochdale, Derby, Banbury, Telford, Peterborough, Aylesbury, Bristol, Halifax, Keighley, Newcastle... now Huddersfield ?. The list seems endless… and there will almost certainly be mo"
These things only happen to a country when it is at war.
I remind you of the Queen's Coronation Oath to the Sovereign people in her Kingdom.
Archbishop. Will you to the utmost of your power maintain the Laws of God and the true profession of the Gospel? Will you to the utmost of your power maintain in the United Kingdom the Protestant Reformed Religion established by law? Will you maintain and preserve inviolably the settlement of the Church of England, and the doctrine, worship, discipline, and government thereof, as by law established in England? And will you preserve unto the Bishops and Clergy of England, and to the Churches there committed to their charge, all such rights and privileges, as by law do or shall appertain to them or any of them?
Queen. All this I promise to do.
The laws of God, that being common law is not laws from the eu unless they are God?
We are in Constitutional Crisis here and I'm supposed to give a dam about people living here under freedom of movement. We are on the precipice of a Civil War, it's boiling up. Have you seen what is going on in France?
All people who have moved here from our Commonwealth have done so by applying, there is no issue there.
"I think you need to look around you 'cos one way or another you have assimilated Irish, Scots and Welsh and in recent years it would appear that many subjects or their descendants of your former Empire have been coming home to "Mother". Currently you have a further responsibility to be a good neighbor to fellow Europeans who have legally chosen to live among ya'all."
Well speaking as part descendant of ancestors from the Emerald Isle back in the 1860s, I give you a toast Ladies and Gentleman.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qhLPWcm-0w
I was actually discussing the possible break up of the UK in leaving the eu.
After Brexit Scotland has a choice, remain in the UK, reapply to join the eu where they only have oil (fossil fuel global warming) and tourism as viable trade, or be fully independent. Well we were good neighbours to them when they bankrupted themselves trying to start an empire in Panama with their Darien Scheme. Yes they deserve a referendum on their future and Id say 2025 would be best for them to make that choice once the dust has settled.
Yes we are good neighbours to France and stand in solidarity with their yellow vest movement and Marie Le Pens push for France to leave the eu. We have given Georgia Pouliquen a French citizen support and shelter for her expose of the crimes committed by the Macron government.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=83_IzL7Tr8A&t=1271s
As for eu citizens being here legally, Im sorry this is just not the case.
We were taken into the eu as an act of treason which is a common law offense and against our constitution.
John Bingley goes into great depth explaining it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GwfgtZ-SC-4&t=7s
This then means anyone entering our country under the freedom of movement are as a result of treason committing a common law offense.
“A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to fear.”
Just because a bunch of politicians has removed treason and sedition from the statute books does not mean they have removed it as a common law offense, the outcome is still the same, death by hanging.
"A lot could still happen before 31st October....like maybe a total panic and a cancelling of the Brexit...................."
Its almost as if the Brexit party did not sweep the recent elections.
We will be out by the 31st October, hopefully on WTO rules.
" The Turkish lira initially fell because of the issues between Erdogan & Trump"
It actually started back in 2013!
Having been in Turkey for both the 1980 and 2016 military coups, I do have some experience of the country.
Was it 2006 if memory serves me right they knocked the zero's off their currency.
The lira has always suffered with inflationary issues, in fact state workers often missed out on being paid on time, currency devaluation is in their history.
I call that particular scenario you describe as "chickens coming home to roost."
The fact that people don't correlate the empire with immigration I find particularly bemusing. Rule Britannia.
PAUL1DEANO. It concerns me, dear chap, that you frequently refer to "England" in describing your country and yourself as a "Little Englander". I think you need to look around you 'cos one way or another you have assimilated Irish, Scots and Welsh and in recent years it would appear that many subjects or their descendants of your former Empire have been coming home to "Mother". Currently you have a further responsibility to be a good neighbor to fellow Europeans who have legally chosen to live among ya'all.
Paul1D. The Turkish lira initially fell because of the issues between Erdogan & Trump (like our pastor being held and Turkey, a NATO ally, opting to buy a Russian missiles system). Recent action by the Turkish Central Bank, ill-advised according to its critics, has sent their currency spiraling down even further.
For me the damage was done the moment the result of your referendum supported Brexit. My sterling deposit accounts in UK immediately lost a lot of their international value so there was (and still is) no point in converting my cash over there into USD. I also earn regular fixed amounts... again contracted as UK£ so , converted to dollars I would be getting around 30% less than I did 2 years ago. Significantly each time the media strongly suggested that Britain might perhaps "remain" or there seemed to be a deal on the cards with the EU, your pound went up somewhat and last Autumn it climbed to something like 1.33 against the dollar and I took the opportunity to to transfer some of my cash. I have also purchased some "collectibles" over there which I was able to sell here at profit.
However, with great respect and I appreciate your suggestion, there is no point whatsoever in selling my UK injvestment portfolio especially as I have investments in the same stocks via the NYSE. Were these "blue chip" companies to be seriously failing....that would indicate that all of you over there would be going tits up anyway.
A lot could still happen before 31st October....like maybe a total panic and a cancelling of the Brexit. Remember the referendum was a close result anyway and by all accounts there were a lot of lies and scary stories from both sides.(bit like our 2016 election?). What with the need to find yourselves a new leader and also to persuade 27 other partners that you really know what you are doing.....Westminster will have its work cut out to convince your people by the current time limit, especially if you take off the time for your Summer Parliamentary Recess and the normal round of Party Conferences which take place during September. Remember also that the EU will be themselves occupied (or distracted) by putting together a whole new establishment to start work on November 1st so don't expect any new offers.
(At least Ariana's share price didn't fall today....even if sterling did...again!)
You trade the markets, if you feel little England is finished and Brexit will financially hit your investment portfolio then sell up now.
As a proud little Englander I still support a full unconditional withdrawal out of the eu no matter what the outcome.
In fact the Turkish lira has taken such a hit against the dollar too and if you think Sterling will go the same way, why wait get out now and don’t take the hit in your portfolio.
Paulmason - I ran out of my allowed text before I could get into "child brides". Again there is historical effects but in the last 5 years or so new legislation over here has limited this male-orientated desire to wed kids. It doesn't seem to have reached Massachusetts & New Hampshire.....must be their European ancestry! ...droits de seigneur etc (we've been there before on this board, too) Having said that...I'm not entirely sure where you are defining "child". UK marriage age starts at 16 with parental approval ( 18 without) except in Scotland where such approval is not needed.

Further to my comments of those evangelists (our Vice President is most prominent therein) you may find this map across the so-called ""Bible Belt" of the South somewhat illustrating...
https://thehumanist.com/commentary/linking-religion-teen-pregnancy-theres-map
Finally, noting the other Paul's (P1D) comment "USA is probably one of the most hated countries in the world" it would appear somewhat illogical for so many thousands of people seeking to immigrate here. (don't worry P1D, unless you are exceptionally smart or rich ....you don't even get the chance to apply. The only Brits normally acceptable are those born in Ulster! (Sorry about that...Tommy, Jock and Taff). Regards DJ
(At least Ariana's share price didn't fall today....even if sterling did...again!)
OK, paulmason, I'll attempt to discuss the two points you have put to me but the politics involved may well cause other contributors to request us to change the subject to mining/Ariana etc...in which case I would desist from further comment.
Firstly, I am sorry that you got the "raving hump" but I don't believe that I offered you untruths or anything that you most probably didn't already know about the scenario over there. I have basically echoed the opinions of other Europeans and, very likely most of the spectators across the globe. So there's no purpose in "shooting the messenger" and it's for the United Kingdom to resolve the situation to the satisfaction of its majority. How "United" you will ultimately become may be another matter entirely, since it appears that the Scots and most Londoners want to stay in the EU.
My answer, as a Democrat supporter and voter, to your two questions is that the situation evolved through a combination of pure venom and male domination by the so-called WASPS - (White Anglo-Saxon Supremacist Protestants) a social group—of typically wealthy and well-connected white Protestants, usually of British descent—in the United States. The group dominated American society, culture, and the leadership of the Republican party until the World War II era. They are well placed in major financial, business, legal, and academic institutions, and had, in the past, close to a monopoly on elite society due to intermarriage and nepotism. The current correlation appears to especially include the "evangelicals" right across the Southern States who are very much supportive of the current President and (those I know well) have a fierce hatred of the last President and a determination to undo everything he attempted...albeit against the latter Republican majority in Congress. They have and want lots of guns to hand....in case.
It is said that absolute power corrupts and in the US that is best demonstrated by the effect of our capitalist system, "reaganomics" if you like, which has virtually eliminated our middle class but left us with a kinda 1% super rich "privileged" society heading up monster global corporations. Some of these people and their underlings have preyed on the ladies and this has led to the establishment of the Me Too Movement and several prominent law suits involving celebrities, politicians and industrials. The gals are rebelling everywhere against male dominance and in my State they have won key positions and already legislating on many issues which the former Republic Administration failed to act ...specifically like gun controls.
There is nothing "superior" about this aspect of America. It is immoral, degrading and unworthy of my Nation. But happens over there too.....remember Jimmy Savile as well as Rotherham, Oxford, Rochdale, Derby, Banbury, Telford, Peterborough, Aylesbury, Bristol, Halifax, Keighley, Newcastle... now Huddersfield ?. The list seems endless… and there will almost certainly be mo
Ok, so I can’t remember the last time I posted, and I do not normally do so. I was a long term holder with Mariana including Chile and Argentina and earned a whole lot of money in Turkey (more luck than judgement) and I’m only here for the same if it happens. I’ve been with AAU for 4 years so again a long term holder. But I have the raving hump now with our cousin from the good old USA and his comments.
It is interesting to note that the so called American way washing over the world is in their minds the only way..
so perhaps DesertJoe could kindly explained a couple of points that makes them so superior.
Why is it that in the land of the free, men can still take child brides in 50% of the good old USA states.
And, why is it that good old Americans can buy semi automatic weapons legally which go on to cause horrific shootings, and the gun lobby quote amendment and politicians support this.
I know that the UK is not the be all and end all; but please don’t criticise where we are. That’s being sanctimonious, which I’m sure you’re not.
Happy to discuss further. Iran, gulf, trade wars etc
Do they drive Hyundai’s in Alabama too?
Just to set the record straight, anyone in these shores who is for the eu, I consider them traitors and should be hung for treason! Anyone from outside these shores interfering with our fight for Independence and Sovereignty I consider an enemy combatant.
As for shooting flies with your gun in Texas, well USA is probably one of the most hated countries in the world.
Are you sure, P1D, that you weren't born in Alabama? You seem to have the right requirements to receive a free lobotomy, Lovely Boy.
I enjoy people watching and figuring out what makes them tick....but in your case I am somewhat baffled. Other folk here may prefer to block you out, of course, and you may never know how unpopular you have become because you probably won't be addressed either. For myself , since I am a self-confessed "troll", I can act respond to you anytime and anyway I choose (barring censorship my LSE moderators!) or I can prefer to remain aloof. Suffice to say that I reckon you are a ****** (it rhymes with tanker) . Have a nice day , loser.
Just for the record ...in Texas they shoot the flies off the walls (so I'd love ya to be one) and the "better hotels" have heavy blinds to reduce heat & glare . Yup....you gotta be Alabama, PAUL1DEANO,.....all mouth, trousers & Trump.
Oh a Holiday Inn, they tend to have flowered curtains.
I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall when you pulled on the petals of one of the flowers to draw the curtains then jumped into bed.
Did you keep it to yourself you were travelling at an average speed of 67mph in your Hyundai or share that news, oh how I’d love to have been that fly on the wall if you did.
Paul1D - Theresa is dropping out, Your currency is dropping out, Your stock prices are dropping (sadly including Ariana!) Your leading Parties are in deep doo-doo, Flippant Farage is cock-a-hoop and you are about to get an absolutely fantastic fibber visit from our President Bonespurs. So---I might as well indulge ya this time.
I get British Motoring perfectly. My MGB had five hoods in three months until they got one to actually fit. My Rover SD (V8) gearbox seized up and I skidded across all three lanes of M3. 3 months later I got it back (and the RAC nominated inspector listed 22 serious further faults on a new car. I was paid out by the supplying BL dealer. The brakes failed on my new XJ6 and I didn't make it around a roundabout just outside Scousertown. There are more "gotcha" cameras on your thoroughfares than anywhere else I know.....even California tollroads.
At least the Morgan Car Company is still going and successfully exporting. Once (in UK) I owned a historic JAP-engined V-twin 3-wheeler. Wish I'd kept it and shipped it home to the States.
Yes - I stayed in two Holiday Inns, one Hilton and (complimentary) at a tribal casino/hotel en route to Dallas & back.
Re. Ford Mustangs, you just don’t get British motoring.
We revolutionised motorsports by going lighter and nimble with aerodynamics.
Admittedly we made a bit of a mess with commercial car production.
I’m a little curious, on your avg 67mph trip to Dallas did you stop at any hotel, motel, holiday inns?
And don't knock the Reliant - quality quirky British car! Wish I could put a smiley face after that.....
You are so much more diverse in your holdings than me. I am far more parochial, but at least I have expanded beyond the safe 'big name' stocks to tiddlers like AAU. Interesting that you should land on the ones you do out of the thousands out there. Presume you follow some tips?
I like the Mustang (and GT40 of course). May have said before that the Ford dealers are wise and pop a new or nearly new Mustang on every forecourt here to sucker the punters in and flog them a bit of mundane tinware. I like the Camaro too, be great over here on our small roads!
Hey ******....just for the record...I also drive a Mustang. An American icon and probably the last true American-built Ford. They even make them RHD for you (at nearly twice our retail price). It can also average 67 mph. Can you still get spares for your Reliant?
Hey Concorde nose, I challenge you to a charity boxing match, up for it?
