The doubts I always had a bout electric was for buses and lorries - big heavy vehicles. Do not know how much research has been done into this.
I also do not think hydrogen is out of the game for this sector. and I think they need to pay particular attention to rural areas when they start to change the rules and make use of conventional vehicles more punitive in terms of taxation to use.
For climate change and CO2 - the Euro 6 diesel is not a bad vehicle when compared to petrol and earlier diesel engines.
I do believe technology will have an improvident part to play in reducing CO2 & other emissions which contribute to climate change. I can buy the argument that the science is not completely proven, but it's a long way to being there - and we have to take a precautionary approach, and i think the role of UK and advanced western countries is to lead the way with technology and set the example.
And apart from this - hope SML - a battery minerals company - can have a bright future and increasing share price. Found it hard not to top up last week but resisted.
Good thread - thanks for the replies. I am a rural dweller - and diesel (I have a Euro 6 and Euro 5) are still the best options for me. I have been looking at the options to replace the Euro 5 with a greener battery car, but cost wise it does not work, many batteries are leased based on mileage, and DERV is more cost effective, and DERV puts lots of tax ££'s into the Gov coffers - doing much more good than paying for roads.
I think city's will end up with "electric car clubs" - much like they do with the scooters just now, a scooter you pick one up at side of road (speaking about big US in particular cities) and pay by app by minute. In a modern city with good affordable public transport - you would not need to own a car. If you need to make a long journey you could rent one.
I rented a car - an A3 equivalent in London last week from Sixt for £35, and £6 to cover the insurance excess.
I went into a Tesla showroom in the US last year, and went into the model X and was blown away - but the price would still be the sticking point - range is OK. But the UK Gov collects £Billions in fuel duty - this tax is still required for public services - so doing away with petrol/diesel has to factor this in too.
I also have a lot of shares in "big oil". I think I will be gradually shedding these . But not replacing the investments with AIM Shares - that I have learned in the last couple of years!
London people have a guilty conscience from the years of pollution back to the old pea souper fogs. The rest of us now have to be told how awful we are. Electric vehicles are good for city driving, short distances and no direct pollution but the electricity is generated miles away where the rest of us are polluted by it. It's coming though so SML are in the right business. Just need to get the stuff out of the ground.

Gradually ( but not that gradually ) you will all be forced into electric. Via legislation and tax.
Goverments will give Big Oil some time to adjust, but coming climate change will start to force their hand.
It will not be a 'Choice'. The landscape in 10 years time will look VERY different. Some of it will be unter-wasser....
Will it be rechargeable battery or will there be a new 'game changer' ... tough one... but big money going in to battery production right now so it WILL be POLITICAL.
However, happily, if you mine metals, I think you'll be OK.
The only people who might have a worry are lithium mines if lithium becomes not the main metal. But big money committed to Lithium already.... The Li-ion batteries I use to work day to day are INCREDIBLE !!!!
I am inside North Circular so my 'dirty' diesel 08 plate has 2 years left. Don't drive much but will be ebaying the 'old girl' in 18 months. Some lucky punter will get her for about a tenner!

I hated everything about electric cars until I went in a Tesla x and I immediately got it.
Speed of charge will have a big negative effect on the lifespan of the current banks of 18650 batteries.
I think electric vehicles have 2 problems.
1 govt still have yet to impose a taxation system that will work on mass uptake and make them financially attractive.
Most countries including the UK dont have the power infrastructure to handle everyone charging their vehicles, we are only just managing current requirements.
Address them and electric vehicles will have a future.
My understanding is every lamppost would have charging points. Our footpaths will be crossed with cables. One of the future issues of complaint ...
Mine was a Grundig. A good German make. It still works nearly 30 years on. A 4 hour tape became 8 hours as you could turn it over. The head tracked the information on the tape improving the quality. VHS and Betamax had fixed heads. If the tape was a little out of alignment you lost quality.
SML has gone in to a bit of a coma when electric cars are becoming all the rage. Get this moving JP and get some money out of the previous Cobre client.
I do think top up fuel cells will be the future. Batteries have their place but maybe not for transport. Fortunately SMLs aimed at more electrics than just battery.
I had video 2000. The outcome is not always the best one.
We need some good news tomorrow which is directly relevant to SML. Battery technology is the future. We need to get the relevant minerals out of the ground.
