In September 2019 SEE issued an RNS, rumour was it was an emergency order. At the CMD, ND said latest contract win happened so fast.
Since then, no reveals by SEYE, the BMW 3 was among the last 2 that were revealed. BMW is missing 3 BMW models to date.
Recently Jimbo unearthed what looked like a refreshed BMW 3 for next year I believe.
Dot to dot to dot......
Also, do we know that the camera is being used in production models? Or, have they decided to just rely on steering wheel torque for now?
Exactly what I have been wondering, you would have thought it was the perfect marketing opportunity. First set of results and BMW with smarteyeDMS should have wiped the floor with the others. Unless BMW know it's not that good and don't intend to market aggressively until they get the next gen from SEE. Kick in the balls for smarteye I think.
May 2019, Seye announced 3 Series as one of their models. They only name them when out on the road, so 3 Series going forward had Seye tech in it.
2020 BMW put forward a 3 Series to ENcap without the DMS active (camera was fitted but not active) Instead rely on steering wheel torque.
Why did BMW do this?
BMW 3 Series
“Gets a ‘very good’ rating, with one of the best scores in safety back-up testing. The only vehicle to feature a Driver Monitoring System, WHICH ALTHOUGH RELATIVELY BASIC, is increasingly important for driver engagement.
I would what thatcham review of the SEE tech will be like?\

Ah, seems that the DMS is not active on 3 series but X5.
Viktor on twitter not happy with the Merc being ahead of the 3 series considering 3 series has DMS fitted and the merc none. I think he missed the point, it's the functionality of the DMS that counts. Not sure how great an understanding of the tech he has.

No wonder BMW came over to SEE. Sure others will follow or followed already.

The BMW internal camera appears to be an ornament
"BMW's appropriately named Driving Assistant Professional accurately portrays system functionality. The promotional material and the handbook correctly indicate the limitations of the system capabilities. Status information is clear, and the 3-Series offers a head-up display showing the system status in the driver’s direct line of sight. BMW equipped the 3-Series with an internal camera but it is not used for the functionality tested in Driver Monitoring, and relies only on steering wheel input. The system balances driver steering input with lane guidance, promoting co-operative driving."
The 3 Series was named as a model by SEYE

Facts not water cooler chats
The detailed comment on the Ncap website is damning for Tesla
"Tesla’s system name Autopilot is inappropriate as it suggests full automation. The promotional material suggests automation where the handbook correctly indicates the limitations of the system capabilities, which could lead to confusion. Status information is clear, but the Model 3 does not offer a head-up display showing the system status in the driver’s direct line of sight. While the Tesla is equipped with an internal camera, it is not used for Driver Monitoring relying only on steering wheel input for driver engagement. The system resists driver steering input and then disengages, limiting co-operative driving."
Its got SEE stamped all over it......
What makes a good AD system, according to NCAP, is a good balance between steering support and driver input. Van Ratingen explains, “We test the cars in multiple very challenging scenarios that are not uncommon on the highway. Many of these systems will alone be unable to cope with the situations presented as they will see the object too late to avoid the crash. They need the driver to react.
The key is finding the balance between assistance and keeping the driver engaged. “Too little help from the car and there would be little benefit to the driver. Too much support, and the driver may be lured into thinking they don’t need to maintain attention,” says van Ratingen.
What this means is that with increasing levels of assistance from the car, it becomes more and more critical for the system to ensure that the driver remains engaged in the driving task. “The more support and assistance the car gives the driver, the more effort actually has to be put in by the manufacturer to make sure the driver is engaged,” van Ratingen says.
In Euro NCAP’s recent testing, high-end vehicles including BMW, Mercedes and Audi have shown an improvement in the assistance of their systems over the two years, as they have all made a conscious effort to further balance their advancements with increased driver engagement.
https://www.automotiveworld.com/news-releases/euro-ncap-whos-driving/
Dr. Michiel van Ratingen, Euro NCAP Secretary General, said
“Assisted driving technologies offer enormous benefits by reducing fatigue and encouraging safe driving. However, manufacturers must ensure that assisted driving technology does not increase the amount of harm incurred by drivers or other road users compared to conventional driving. The best systems offer a balance between the amount of assistance they provide and the level of driver engagement – and should be supported by an effective safety backup. The results of this round of tests demonstrate that driving assistance is fast becoming better and more readily available, but until driver monitoring is significantly improved, the driver needs to remain responsible at all times.”

Iam sure at some point the NTSB will sit with Mr Musk until he makes the call. You never know the marketing Dept might be in contact already?
Be great PR & Exposure to declare Tesla as a win iam sure. He is the master of exposure without spending a $ after all.
That video is basically an advert for SM
"The driver needs to be responsible and engaged at all times behind the wheel"
You guys are quick! Beat me to posting. An issue for Tesla!
Terrym you would think Mr Musk would pick up the telephone.
They brought a video out aswell.

World-first testing system aims to end dangerous confusion around “self-driving” cars.
https://www.sleafordstandard.co.uk/lifestyle/cars/world-first-testing-system-aims-end-dangerous-confusion-around-self-driving-cars-2988937
Euro NCAP's new assessment protocols focus on two main areas: Assistance Competence
– a balance between the technical competencies of the system (Vehicle Assistance) and the
extent to which it keeps the driver alert and engaged (Driver Engagement) - and Safety
Backup, the car’s safety net in critical situations. Aunique grading system – similar to the fivestar safety rating - helps consumers understand the conclusions of the tests and compare
assistance performance at the highest level. Each car falls into one of four categories: Entry,
Moderate, Good and Very Good.
Three cars in the premium segment - the Mercedes-Benz GLE, the BMW 3 Series and the
Audi Q8 – are graded ‘Very Good’, achieving a good balance between offering a high level
of driving assistance but keeping the driver engaged and in control of the driving task. They
also provide a good crash avoidance backup system and respond appropriately if the driver
becomes incapacitated while the car is in assistance mode.
High volume sellers Renault Clio and Peugeot 2008 were both given an Entry grade. Lacking
the sophistication of the more advanced systems tested, they provide a relatively modest
level of assistance, ensuring that the driver is not disengaged from the driving task.
Tesla’s pioneering role in self-driving technology is reflected in its top scores for Vehicle
Assistance and Safety Backup. However, its “Autopilot” system does little to keep the driver
engaged. Its distinct steering strategy gives the impression that either the car is driving itself
or the driver has full control, and the system is more authoritarian than cooperative. Gradingwise, the car is badly let down by its performance in Driver Engagement and ends up ranked
2
‘Moderate’. On the upside, Tesla offers over-the-air updates and can rapidly introduce
performance improvements, as they have shown to be doing in recent years.
