I think you are safe Rox, very small chance bojo confirm restart on 17th May tomorrow. I think he will say the gov will make decision base on data not date again, we have to wait a few weeks to see any new case increase because of shops reopen..... But he may say something like try to keep covid test price lower to boost travel industry. Gla
The announcement in one form or another is going to happen for sure and when it does the share price will rise. It’s a guessing game as to when this is going to happen but we have got 5 weeks.
The day traders who have just sold at £3.80ish are hoping it will drop before it breaks the £4 barrier.
None of us know what will happen and when but I’m keeping my fingers crossed that nothing is announced until at least Wednesday so I can buy back my shares into my Isa!
IMO would be very surprised if they delay any important announcements with regards to getting the economy back on track. The Government haven’t been particularly brilliant at supporting the travel industry and they definitely need to start providing more clarity for the sector - but stranger things have happened.
Shapps announcement last week seemed to fall on deaf ears, so clearly more meat on the bones is required and sooner rather than later (they can’t keep kicking the can down the road as it takes months for the logistics to be implemented).
I don't believe there will be any new announcements until Monday 19th I believe all political announcements are delayed until after the funeral.
Great work Beach.
Its nuanced but i think thats as near certain as we are going to get.
Domestic cruising has been designated Uk based for covid. So whatever protocols apply to uk land based tourism will apply to staycations. For me the nearest comparitor is hotels - so if the Savoy opens we can cruise. Saga very well placed with top rating on covid compliance protocols.
It will happen but less convinced it will get a specific announcement.
I’m with you both
This is the way I see it.
Cruise operators needs 2/3 months preparation I’d say to get up to full operations again. So behind closed doors they get the nod for UK Cruises. They obviously can’t come out and say that till a proper announcement, in line with other indoor hospitality and all ‘tests’ being met etc etc.
This is now all about ‘Crowd Control’ At every level, not just travel.
You are right Rox, why we lost 2% on Friday if it’s confirmed? But I am doubt saga will issue a RNS when restart is confirmed, saga very rare to issue RNS about travels, we never see one about cruises restart delays before. Maybe it’s the way saga save the costs of Operation, lol.
“The UK government has confirmed that domestic cruises will restart in England no earlier than 17 May “
Am I missing something or am I being a bit thick here?
Nothing as been confirmed from what I can see.
Tbh if it has been then surely Saga would release a RNS wouldn’t they?
Thanks Beachbum, great work! It’s sound like domestic cruises in the road map will start with other domestic travels together no early than 17th May as hotels and indoor pubs restaurants... So, we have to wait bojo to reconfirm it if all covid numbers are good. Hope new case and death numbers keep low in next couple weeks, then he will confirm it. Also, hope CDC in US will give green light to cruises soon, that will help as well.
Page 14 of the Taskforce Report confirms it - Link below but I have copied and pasted it anyway below. https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/977446/Report-of-the-Global-Travel-Taskforce-accessible.pdf
Restart of the cruise sector
32. The first GTT report recognised the significant progress made by the cruise sector over the last year to develop COVID-19 operating procedures. The Department for Transport subsequently published a phased risk-based approach to restarting the cruise sector. Since then, much has changed, including our knowledge, understanding and response to mitigating risks of the virus. The UK government has confirmed that domestic cruises will restart in England no earlier than 17 May. This report sets out a framework for a risk-based approach to managing a safe restart of international travel, underpinned by analytical evidence. Therefore, the UK government will restart international cruises alongside the wider restart of international travel, in line with the “traffic light” system. This will be subject to continued satisfactory evidence from domestic restart as well as successful cruise operations elsewhere in the world. This will be considered at each of the Checkpoint reviews. This is also subject to the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the UK government and industry covering the cost and liabilities of repatriation.

The market reaction doesn’t look like already given green light to resume from 17th May, it’s highly possible but not confirmed. I am worrying we may have to wait few more weeks when bojo confirm it with all step three reopen industries together, same as last Monday he confirmed shops able to open from next Monday. Hope he knows that travels need confirmation more than just a week before reopens. Let’s see what bojo going to say on Monday.
“Domestic cruising has already been given the green light to resume from May 17, in line with hospitality businesses in the UK. Many cruise lines have already pivoted to offer sailings in UK waters this summer. “
Has it?
Where?
