Bakky have you been on the baccy..?
If there is a test that is proven to be gold standard sensitivity and accuracy, and is a damn sight cheaper than PCR tests, and you are spending tax payers money, I would like to believe it is an easy choice, and yes funny enough it is about cost but not supplementing quality or reducing risk for cheaper alternative.
LFT tests are very much the way forward, and it is the PCR tests that will be phased out.
Omega stand to benefit substantially from their development.
bakky's a bit (over) committed to sequencing. Not sure he's keeping up on lft progress but of course PCR testing will continue to have it's place but not as a simple binary test. That is where lfts are ideal. Follow-up with sequenced PCR's by all means.
PCR and lamp testing is going nowhere. The govt are buying auto equipment to make upto 500k tests a day going forward. Sequencing is also increasing fourfold. The shift to lft for travel is all about the cost, nothing else. A decision which is set to bite them in the arris and likely be reversed imo.
Flashy - The PCR’s will still be used but LFT’s will take most of the share going forward even if new variants pop up…from the articles that I’ve read using PCR’s aren’t much different to using high quality LFT’s as a minimal amount of positive PCR’s are being sequenced to check which variant it was…
I’m assuming this was the reason for the shift to LFT’s for double jabbed international travellers coming back into the UK…Which seems to be the testing method that’ll be in the limelight for sometime :)
Thanks Okehurst and Chickster. I'll check that back tomorrow. But if this is the case then PCRs will be needed again. I'm aware of Mu but I think it's still too early to say if this is a variant that is worse than Delta (I reserve judgement to change that once evidence becomes available). We hear often about variants but some of them don't seem to develop into threats (thank god). Cheer.s
Flashy,
Mu appears to be the one worrying the scientists, let’s hope the LFT’s can pick it up.
Agree the days of mass PCR are over, we are going to have to live with Covid 19, cheap accurate testing and no booster for under 50’s seems to be the latest plan.

In the i newspaper
New Covid Delta variant with mutation that could dodge vaccines found in UK
There are just 19 cases so far of Delta + E484K, the mutation associated with immune escape – suggesting the virus is coming under pressure from highly vaccinated population
I'll try and have a look through this ove rthe next few days. But understand the gov is scrapping PCR testing that means they aren't so concerned about vairants. It's also unlkleoy that a new variant will appear that's worse than Delta (See youtubre, Dr John Campbell, todya's presentation where he says it's unlikley that we will have new variants(. Thanksk

Wee bit heavy but does highlight the complexities monitoring the various strains and by association testing.
