Tranter, the only thing you need to worry about is what you OWN and can use as barter. Forget the country. Owning land a (primary wealth) means jackchit unless u can put into productive wealth. A field of corn doesn't magically appear 6 months later. You need resources and forms of payment to make it happen.
The end of WW2 the main forms of wealth to the ordinary person was PMs and Fags - nothing else mattered. Forget social security checks.
Owning a Venezuela Oil field means nothing......unless....
Maybe I do see it wrongly. But cannot think of any other place on Earth where people would rather live 'IF' money becomes what it is, just a 'token' of wealth, as in a lesser degree so is PM's, diamonds, works of art etc. Many failed civilisations had the latter, but little use apart from buying a little time by those naïve enough to take it in return for something really worthwhile like food, guns, and beer.
People joke on here about 'going long on beans, shotgun shells etc' when the world looks to go into melt down as is 'threatened' every so often. So the states having an advantage of huge land mass, energy, food, guns, and as stable, loyal a population as is feasible and a large powerful military and armed police to control to some degree those who aren't, therefore I assumed would be more beneficial than how much gold is hidden away or how little your paper is now worth, IF things get really really grim.
You travel more than most, you see the lavish lives that millions live in Europe, the huge land mass for growing, etc. Think of Greece, the people live a basic lifestyle, so if they go bankrupt the olive fields the way of life for many won't change anywhere near as drastically as it would for places like the UK where it is cold, damp, overcrowded, now filled with crims, the populace unable to live without tech, cars, cash, etc.
So on leaving the EU I am all for it, but the CV crisis looming IF I had a choice I think a larger landmass self sufficient in the basics is more important than currency worth.
If you and your family were starving, then you would give a lump of gold for a loaf, but the loaf seller would not wish to exchange it if 'he and his' were starving too.
The feral type already well versed into gangs, knives, guns and violence would relieve us of such anyway, IF it still had worth I am certain.
Didn't save the Aztecs nor us I fear.
Imo depends on what level of global horror this CV causes, my scenario is a worst case. Likely still have a jiffy bag marked 'gift' come through the post containing a battery fly swat this summer from China.
They are very resilient. I had a head on car crash with two Chinese in a private car, and I swear they got out and just run down the road to delivery the takeaways to nearby homes before returning and apologising for the accident.
How could you fault such people. They are great survivors. Hope we are too.
Whilst having great respect for your postings and views, I do see things differently with President Trump and the position the USA are in compared to almost, if not all other countries.
The data is dire on most major economies and will get far worse due to CV.
Whilst Trump does, as all leaders do, play down the bad, and over hype the good, for only a fool in leadership position would 'tell it how it is'. You see the flack that anyone saying the truth even about this miserable share gets. People don't 'want' the truth. They want hope, bull, and a better vision of a future.
America whether it has oodles of Gold, or little now in Fort K, has something more important than that if or when deep crisis hits.
That being, a strong leader who does not give a fig, what the rest of the world thinks about his policies, and will do what it takes to keep the people who voted for him warm, feed, and militarily safe as possible.
He answers to no-one.
He has self sufficiency in oil, most minerals, has such capacity for growing food, other nations would starve without them. He also, and importantly has most of his population who are personally armed, very loyal to the United States if not himself, although many clearly are, as he would not have been elected otherwise.
The country has the strongest military power, space knowledge, and has kept ahead of hi tech, just 'using' lesser countries to do the slave work of making such.
So, when as during the last WW push comes to shove, the 'Foolish President and it's neurotic people' will be the ones, by always ensuring they stay at the top of their game the ones who come out of it best.
Think of the credit crisis, 'they' may have started it with junk bonds, but 'others' were left holding the baby, not them for much of it.
If Trump thinks 'green energy' is not in his nations best interest atm, they won't cow down as we will do. His nation wont be banning log fires, nor having to close public toilets and libraries as we now do due to poverty.
Whilst his useless paper dollars, may be seen as such, people STILL invest in the USA for the reasons given above NOT because of pieces of paper or lumps of metal.
It will be those who hold the paper that have the probs, not those living within the military protected food basket floating on oil, coal, and enough land mass for solar, or whatever else they need.
