Thanks tone I'll look into that, already sold my soul to Apple so theres little data left to mine anyway.
Another angle is go down the food route. theres bigger gains to be had, prevention is better....

I looked at a couple of those too....they seem OK
They share "non-personalised data to our partners" which is a normality with most Apps I reckon...probably a good idea to just look through the Data Policy though ...
Thanks taskmaster. I'll keep an eye on it.
I found another interesting one this morning "Treeapp" on Android and iPhone. Answer a couple of questions from the app's sponsors and they fund a tree. You get to do it once a day, so one tree a day for just a few seconds of your time. Planted my first today. Not an endorsement as I've only used it once so don't know if there are any adverse side effects, but I hope not. Anyone interested can check it out here and find the app on your app store.

toneman, perhaps another option..Woodbois.. been on my watchlist a while.

Thanks NLLeeroy, the mobile number contact on the web page was a bit of a concern for me too. So today I checked up with Companies House and all the records seem in order there. I also contacted one of the partners they claim to use for tree planting and they confirmed their involvement as well. So thanks for your useful nudge. I'm now confident they are a legitimate, albeit young, company. I've decided I'll support them with my donations.
Only having a mobile number on the just one tree life website is a big red flag for me. Web page looks great but are there any records at C house or charities commission ( I don't know what the rules are for social enterprises). If not already seen everyone should watch 2040 (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7150512/) by the way, we have the tech just not the political or corporate will.
Thanks taskmaster, those links are great. I've added the ecosia extension to my browser. So simple. Can't switch my mobile, but I might be able to persuade my wife at her next end of contract. Amazing the things you discover here.
Good stuff tm. Every little helps.

Thanks Bilbs. Your analysis aligns pretty well with my own. They seem to have thought about the long term protection of what's being planted, although whether that stands the test of time I'm not sure I'll ever find out. Your figures are about right, £1 in less well off nations and anything from £3 to £10 here at home. Your 'Kiva' suggestion is very interesting.
I'll discuss it in detail with my better half this evening. I imagine we may even end up with a mixed approach. If it's just a numbers game then £1 per tree makes the target easier to hit, but mustn't forget about the natural world at home too.
sorry numbers off a bit.
Original gift £955, now worth £650. 116 loans each of £25 (£2900 total loans)
Something like 1.5 billion people cook over charcoal or similar everyday. Kiva lets you invest in solar cells for some of these countries and sometimes even the slow cook ovens that are carbon efficient. While I think it is tough to pick on the lowest carbon producers on the planet they can do their bit. Not a charity at all you lend money to them for free and their agents charge 5-7%. You will find that there is a certain attrition but I've kept £650 lending over and over again for about 6 years and it is now worth roughly £550.
Down to 360...
I'm sure you can plant a tree around the world for £1 but I'm not sure you can grow a tree in western Europe for much less than £10. Plus we need to keep it as wood not convert it into cooking charcoal.
I looked at this way. 1 we need to not just grow trees but convert them into long life things. 2 we need the organisation to own forests but also help others to grow forests. 3 we need the team to be efficient. From this I emailed around and discovered that woodland trust teaches people to work wood, it helps others to grow forests and it does it all for about £10 a tree. I do just about all my charity work on just giving and yes it reduces the efficiency but at least I have one contact and no charity scams. Good luck with your decision.
Although reducing my current carbon footprint, where I feel I can, I can't undo all those international flights, diesel miles, years of electricity from coal and huddling around that North Sea gas flame for warmth. So I've been on those online carbon footprint calculators to work out what I've been responsible for...ouch!
The easiest available 'giving back' solution seems to be trees, with carbon offsetting, so I've been looking at the various online alternatives. The one I like the best so far is "Just One Tree". I like the fact that, as well as aiming to reverse deforestation, they haven't forgotten about the oceans.
Before I finalise my decision to support this organisation over, say, Forest Carbon, National Trust or Woodland Trust, I wanted to know what others think about this or similar schemes.
