"Zibrahimovic, I've phoned Openreach to report the manhole cover problem, they said that they would look into it. Hopefully no one will trip up over the cover. Cheers."
Hope this is not the result.

BT up 5p????
Zibrahimovic, I've phoned Openreach to report the manhole cover problem, they said that they would look into it. Hopefully no one will trip up over the cover. Cheers.
Ok Zibrahimovic, I will look in to that with Openreach. Thanks.
I hope that no one trips up over that and makes a claim was my initial thought.
Nige you could raise it as a fault on openreach website giving the location and someone will go out and put it right immediately as it’s a safety issue.
looks like my wireless keyboard needs a re-charge
"It’s called DUCT SHARING, bought in years ago by OFCOM to generate “competition “, there’s bugga all BT can do about it."
It doesn't matter, because the duct and pole rental price is regulated to cover the cost of repair and allow Openreach (BT) a profit. As has been pointed out many times, BT own the Ducts and Poles separately to Openreach, even thou Openreach administer it. Should BT decide to sell Openreach, they could parcel the infrastructure into a separate holding company with its own valuation.

Fleccy..... "Nige the guy you spoke to in the street, he will just be doing as he's told by his manager, and wont have a clue about the processes leading up to him using the Duct. Virgin Media will have booked the work and cleared it through Openreach, and I assume will have to pay the PIA rental as soon as the work is completed. They may be able to lay the Fibre for free using there own authorised contractors, but the ongoing use of the duct isn't free."
Thanks guys for your replies, and clearing that up. I'm pleased to see Fleccy that Virgin are at least paying some kind of rent for using our BT's infrastructure. Also to add, the VM guy's didn't use the safety fencing while the manhole covers were up, also later I noticed that the double manhole was not down correctly it was sticking up at one end slightly, on further inspection I noticed that the Openreach logo on the manhole was facing a different direction to the other manhole cover. I hope that no one trips up over that and makes a claim was my initial thought.
The ductwork is owned by BT, not Openreach.
Yes Terra it is all owned by BT and maintained by OR… However PIA fees are paid to OR not BT.
OR legally have to maintain the ducting network and provide extra capacity if required at their expense not the altnets.
However we all know it’s an excercise of smoke and mirrors lol and it’s really BT all along but don’t let OFCOM know that we know…
Openreach is owned by the shareholders, not the government.
Using BT ducting is not free. The ductwork is owned by BT, not Openreach.
Virgin have some of their own ducting but it is not extensive.
None of the other providers have invested a brass razoo in either ducting or network and they piggy-back off BT equipment.
But ofcom still insist that the market must be competitive at BT shareholders cost.
Here's some documentation submitted to Ofcom, detailing some of the issues. CityFibre and Openreach give their different points of view.

Lots of Bedtime reading
That with the cost of ground work, permits, traffic lights, materials etc is all down to BT. Said it before, the worlds gone mad…
Yes mate as it stands… don’t forget the other providers have been crying for PIA for a decade but still weren’t happy and then cried for free access but post Sharon White OFCOM imposed cheaper rental prices but definitely not free lol
Thanks Zib. So BT have to supply additional duct on an existing route for possibly the sole use of other network suppliers. That with the cost of ground work, permits, traffic lights, materials etc is all down to BT. Said it before, the worlds gone mad…
when a duct route is full and additional duct is needed by an Altnet to install, do they or BT or both pay for that new duct work…
NDN… Openreach pay for it. Openreach charges the altnets for infrastructure usage, be it ducts or poles…And when altnets damage existing cabling they pay for that damage.
The only advantage altnets have over Openreach when installing the fibre is their ability to get it in the ground and up poles without the safety safeguards OR employees have to use…
Nige. The guy you were talking to is likely a contractor to VM. He has probably spent a couple of days doing some basic training and then sent out to pull cables in wherever needed. From what I have noticed in the last few months, these contractors are chuckling it in with little consideration for health and safety of the public or weather they are installing the additional cables in the correct manor. I wonder how long it will be before we start hearing stories about loss of service due to damage to existing cables by new installations. Perhaps Fleccy can answer this one can’t find any info on, when a duct route is full and additional duct is needed by an Altnet to install, do they or BT or both pay for that new duct work…
"he replied yes, well Openreach is part owned by the government, so we can use it. I said I don't think so, Openreach is owned by BT to which he assured me that it was. He either doesn't know what he's talking about or full of BS."

'Any cables bt find not authorised to be in their ducting should be cut and pulled out'
I agree but you do know that the press would lay the blame 100% on BT as they always do..
Any cables bt find not authorised to be in their ducting should be cut and pulled out
I had a conversation with a Virgin worker today who was busy laying fibre using Openreach's infrastructure. He had the manhole cover off and was pulling fibre through. I got chatting to him and I said so you're using Openreach's infrastructure to lay your fibre cable, he replied yes, well Openreach is part owned by the government, so we can use it. I said I don't think so, Openreach is owned by BT to which he assured me that it was. He either doesn't know what he's talking about or full of BS.
This got me thinking why are BT letting other companies use their infrastructure for free, it would cost the likes of Virgin a lot more money to build their own, not to mention time it would take them. I hope that BT are getting something out of letting the likes of Virgin for this.
